With the recent release of Academy’s 1/48th CH/HH-46D, Eduard followed suit with their latest release of an exterior photo-etch detail set in the H-46 Sea Knight line.
Packaged in their usually manner of a clear resealable plastic bag, and a cardboard backer for support. The 1/48th set has over 90 pieces on a 2 3/4 x 4 ½ fret and a three page instruction sheet that is easy to follow with color coded steps and numbers. Each part is held in place using thin attachment tabs, something I favor which lessens the damage during it’s removal.
The photo-etch set contains several parts to detail and to make a more accurate D model. 30 of the pieces are used on the rotor heads, replacement parts for the landing gear struts, some screens and tie down rings. There is also a replacement for the kits thick large howler speaker (optional) that covers the port fuselage access door.
And more importantly you get the coned shape engine screens that’s found on the D’ model, and that it looks much better than the kits solid piece. I’d like to suggest that when using the photo-etch screen, use the kit part to wrap the photo-etch piece around to help get it’s shape.
Eduard also released three other photo-etch sets for the CH/HH-46D. Theses sets include color seatbelts for the troops cargo seats, item # 49282 price $10.95. An interior set that is in color and contains two frets, one for the cockpit and the other for the cargo bay area, item # 49351 price $19.95 and a color cockpit set, item #FE351 price $7.95.
Conclusion
If you're looking to build a current 1/48th Navy/Marine CH-46, the Academy Sea Knight is the best kit out and also one of the easiest kits to build. I would also recommend getting the Eduard exterior set and if there’s some change left over, get the interior set as well.
