I picked this little kit up from my local shop, as a "filler" whilst I was waiting for my other models to dry - I wasn't expecting much from it for the price.

When I opened the box I was suprised to say the least! The kit contains 3 sprues holding the wings, fuselage, cockpit, cowl and other parts moulded in a light grey plastic. There is a small sprue of drop tanks and rockets (being the "M" version). Finally a small sprue of clear plastic for the windshield, canopy and a landing light. It was impressive to see that the kit was sealed in an air-evacuated bag, which avoids movement whilst in transit.
First impressions were good, there was no visible ejection marks on the outer surfaces and the details was good, with panel lines well defined. Construction begins with the cockpit, which is well detailed with the dash having most of the important raised features. The sides of the cockpit were a little poorer, perhaps Revell think that people would be more interested in the dash! The seat was well moulded with raised details of the seatbelts.
The engine is well detailed, made up of the two seperate banks of 9 cyclinders - nicely depicting the PW double wasp engine.

The main fuselage went together well, albeit it with sufficient clamping, whilst the glue cured. You have the option of landing gear up or down - here Revell have impressed by including the interior detail of the wing internals, including the pneumatic pumps in the main wing assembly. If you choose the "flying" position undercarriage closures need a bit of work to get them to fit.
Finishing off the kit includes two decal options, which are nice, but the paint scheme is a little unorthodox, with Revell advising on the shade of colour with thier normal ratio advice. I choose to paint the model in aluminium metal and use some decals from my spares box. However it would be nice to see what the kit would have come out with the advised paint scheme!
On the whole a pleasing little kit and definetly worth the money! Dont tell my girlfriend, I bought two more of the same, for those rainy days!SUMMARY |
