This is a review of a current release from Kalmbach publishing. The title as stated above is self-explanatory. The material is compiled of published feature articles, from the Fine Scale Modeler magazine periodical. The content is printed on 8 ½ x 11card stock quality paper. The book is made up of twenty chapters of subjects, to include 10 U.S. fighters and bombers, 2 Japanese subjects, and 4 German aircraft, and 1 each Russian and British. Additional articles are included which cover a WW2 painting guide, and U.S. Military Aircraft colors. Introduction
Anyone familiar with Kalmbach Publishing’s reputation, will not be surprised to find this collection of articles as being previously printed material. Although each article has appeared in Fine Scale Modeler, it is nice to have articles covering this material in one place, instead of scattered throughout several periodicals. It makes searching for a subject, that you know you have seen before much easier, than doing a scan through your stacks of magazines. The material is concise and informative, and is dispersed with a good selection of detailed in progress color photos. Each article has a closing of references and items used to build the selected subject. Paint Articles
The article on the model paint guide is a chart of various paint manufactures and the available paint of selected military colors by name and number. This is a valuable resource, as not all modelers have access to all paint manufactures, and having several to chose from makes painting, that much easier. All axis and allied participants in WW2 are covered and a list of sources are given as well. The Military Aircraft color article is a continuation of the previous article, with references to FS 595 colors and 7 available model paint manufactures. A listing of standard Camo schemes is included in its closing information.
Conclusion
All of the aircraft articles included are built on the basic to intermediate skill level, and show the reader what can be achieved, with a little scratch building and correction of basic kit flaws. Although there are a few subjects that include after market items; the majority of the topics avoid massive expenditures
in the detail and accessory arena.
All in all, a good easy reading book, and informative collection of modeling aircraft subjects, compiled in a well-published format. SUMMARY |
