USAAF Personnel - WW2

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

Eduard have released a second set of 1/48 scale figures. This time it's the turn of the USAAF. This set is very similar to the earlier Luftwaffe Personnel, although no etched-metal parts are included.

Parts are provided for 2 pilots and 4 groundcrew, plus a ladder, a barrel and a parachute-pack. The boxtop is a little misleading, because the small trestle-wokbench shown isn't included. The aircrew seem to be dressed in one-piece AN-S-31 summer flying suits, so they are well suited for Pacific dioramas etc.

The parts are quite cleanly moulded in dark grey plastic. Most of the figures are broken down into 6 parts and all feature separate heads so, by interchanging the parts, additional poses will be possible. As with the earlier set, there is a lttle sinkage on the thick torsos.

I haven't had a chance to assemble the figures yet but, on the sprues, the proportions look fine. The detail is a little soft - certainly nowhere near as good as on the figures included with the Tamiya Kubelwagen, or some modern Revell-Monogram kits. The barrel should be useful, but the ladder is very heavily moulded - it looks like it could support an elephant!

The instructions are clearly illustrated, with colour matches (where possible) for Gunze, Tamiya, Humbrol, Revell and Testors paints.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
