Every now and then (about once a month usually lol) a kit comes along that is a "must have", and once in a blue moon a kit comes out that is not only a "must have" but is also a "want it now", reasons being its a model that you have fallen in love with, either you built as a kid, just watched it fly by your house, or is so cool you have got to have it. This kit falls into this category for me, it is so cool and different, and just sticks two fingers up at the rivet counter brigade lol. This is a caricature of a plane, an anomaly, but is does look fun.
I'm not going to delve too much into the detail, accuracy or the markings of the kit, as that will only take away any of the "fun" that this kit brings to your desk.
The parts count isn't much, 19 parts moulded in light grey and 1 clear part for the canopy.
No pilot is supplied with the kit, which is a shame as a egg shaped head would have been nice to put in the cockpit.
The cockpit has a tub, with a moulded on seat, instrument panels are just a flat surface, a decal is supplied for the instrument panel, but personally I would dispense with the decal and paint a couple of large dials and several red and yellow switches which would brighten the cockpit area up and keep in with the caricature aspect of the kit.
The fuselage is moulded in the standard left/right halves with pretty much everything for the fuselage moulded onto it, including the tail wheel, engine exhausts and rudder.
The propeller is moulded as one piece and fits into a engine block face, which has the bumps and dips of the engine front.
The 2 wings and 2 tail planes are moulded as one piece each, with the wings having a couple of holes underneath for the undercarriage to fit into.
The undercarriage legs are moulded with the wheel well doors on. The separate wheels have tread and hubs and look quite good.
A couple of egg shaped bombs for the wings complete the aircraft.
The canopy is clear and blemish free and has the frames moulded onto it.
Markings and instructions
The instructions are clear and easy to follow with the build in 2 stages. Internal colours are given for the few parts that need painting. The colour schemes for the aircraft are in black and white but are full profiles of both aircraft. I'm not sure if the topside colour schemes for the aircraft are slightly out RLM wise, but who cares, your building this for fun aren't you lol.
Two sets of markings are given for the egg plane, one of which I believe is the mount of Maj. Josef Priller. The tail number is slightly wrong but its so small that its hardly noticeable.
The other marking is possibly for Maj.Hermann Graf of JG 1.
The decals are printed in good register and look to be thin with a little carrier film around the edges. Hasegawa have even included a couple of swastikas in full on the sheet, which seems strange in today's PC climate.
SUMMARY
Highs: Quick fun build.Lows: A little pricey for what you get.Verdict: A caricature of a plane that just screams FUN, FUN, FUN.

I started modelling in the 70's with my Dad building Airfix aircraft kits. The memory of my Dad and I building and painting a Avro Lancaster on the kitchen table will always be with me. I then found a friend who enjoyed building models, and between us I think we built the entire range of 1/72 Airfi...
