Book Review
Grumman Goose

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

Volume 63 in Steve Ginter's Naval Fighters series is ideally timed to coincide with the release of the Czech Model 1/48 scale kit. The book's 73 pages are packed with hundred of B&W photos. The book also contains very useful 1/72 and 1/48 scale plans, along with a number of original drawings giving details of the airframe and systems.

The book is basically divided into two halves. The first 33 pages deal with the history and development of the Goose, covering its long and varied service career with both US and foreign operators. The second half begins with the plans and a number of diagrams, before moving on to cover the Goose in detail using 27 pages original photos and drawings. Many of the pictures seem to have come from official manuals and feature numbered keys to the controls and equipment. Areas covered include the cockpit and cabin, plus the engine compartments and landing gear. Finally there's a brief round up of available kits.

While the interior gets comprehensive coverage, sadly the book doesn't give as much detail of the exterior of the Goose (it's not a "walk-around") and, from a modeller's point of view, it would be great if there was more information about colour schemes etc. That said, it offers far more detail than any other reference I've found on the Goose, and it will undoubtedly be a great help to anyone building the Czech Model and Sword kits, as well as appealing to aviation historians.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
