Wildcat updates

Vector are well known amongst modellers for their highly detailed resin engines, which are always of a very high quality. For some time, the Russian manufacturer has also produced full kits of its own, as well as aftermarket accessories for kits by other kit makers. The material used is still resin, which is very good for the detail that can be achieved, but requires some different construction techniques to normal plastic kits, especially for gluing.

Besides the major FM-2 correction set already reviewed, Vector also produces some very nice detail parts for the Hobby Boss Wildcat series as a whole.

set #VDS 48-024 - FM-2 Wildcat corrected prop and spinners
At first glance, this set is probably the least necessary of the batch. The shape of the prop blades, diameter and the overall look is pretty much the same. But you'll find the differences when you'll look a little closer. The Vector set is much finer; the prop blades are thinner and a little differently pitched, and you get a bit more detail that you won't find in the kit. The resin parts match references well and you can build the prop with or without boss cap.

Verdict: This update is not as superlative as the FM-2 correction set, but you still get a bit more spice. Detail and execution are very good, but not light years ahead of the kit. But it's the icing on the cake - after all, who wants to put stock rims on a tuned car?

set #VDS 48-025 - F4F-3/4, FM-1/2 control surfaces
Vector's control surfaces set is designed for the HobbyBoss line of Wildcats, but should also fit the Tamiya kit. The Update set features a very nice representation of the fabric covering, which is much better than that of the kit parts. Also the FM-2 rudder is quite different to the kit part. Note: You also get this part with the FM-2 correction set, but as not everyone will get all three sets it is justified to include it here too.

To use these parts you will have to cut away the kit's ailerons and elevators. You'll need the original stabilizers, so be careful not to damage them. Using the Vector control surfaces as a guide, you can then add small hinges from scratch (or you could leave them off as these can hardly be seen). Again moulding and casting are flawless and the resin is very nice to work with.

Conclusion: Once again a very nice update set for HobbyBoss Wildcats. Basically, a very easy conversion, although the sawing work might result in some problems for beginners. Thus I would recommend this set for advanced modellers. Still, with some good equipment (PE- or razor saws) and some patience, it is no big deal and most people should do OK.

You can buy these sets via NeOmega, Linden Hill or Sprue Brothers. Many thanks to Sergey Kosachev for the review samples.

About Steffen Arndt (alpha_tango)
FROM: , GERMANY

I was born in 1974 and started modelling in the 80ies. The first models I remember are a MiG 21 F-13, Saab Draken (both 1/100) and the Tu-2 (72) all from the east German producer Plastikart. during my first years I built all kind of models mainly 1/72 and 1/100. Beside the mentioned Plasticart kits ...

Hi Steffen "e/o" - what does that mean? I did a web-seach and found... Electo-optical, engine out, or some weird sodium hydroxide bleaching process... But, seriously, nice Review! and I'm delighted I could help. And, more to the point... are you going to get stuck into to an FM-2 upgrade? I'm juggling what to line up next for the limited space on my workbench and, along with a couple of really exciting sample kits that are threatening to arrive soon, my choice for an "in my own time" build is coming down to getting back to Vector's Henschel Hs 126 or the FM-2 upgrade. It'd be silly to double-up - so if you're doing this beauty, I'll go for the Henschel. All the best Rowan

Hi Rowan each other .. thought that was obvious ... I really do plan to do the FM-2 next .. but I first have to bury that Super Etendard and then there is the F-22 and the Albatros (though this is on low priority). I have started the Harrier as a fun project, but it seems i need at least the TIALD pod and mount (AMRAAM Line did not answer my email) which means it is on hold til I find a solution. I also have a secret project running but again on low prio as I have to modify the airframe heavily. Besides the FM-2 I need to start the Bf 110G-4. so toss a coin ... I guess J-L is already half (or fully ) through this project .. but the cheater that he is he keeps his models secret until they are done and then we admire him how he does a Legato Fw 190 in two weeks ... all the best Steffen P.S. just this moment I got an email from Luca .... so I can get teh TIALD but not the pylon ... hmmmmm

Hi again Cool - I really felt I should do the Hs 126 anyway, as Sergey was so kind in bailing me out with a new engine after my stupidity! I'm afraid all the TIALD business is totally Double-Dutch to me - but then I always remember you PM-ing me about an "F2-A" and I automatically assumed it was a Brewster Buffalo! All the best Rowan

So let's plan a duel FM-2 build (ha ha with us two it's like watching snail races) for January. I'll start the nightfighter next (after the SEM) and we have two Lw builds online .. one day cheers Steffen

Hi Steffen I would - but I've got a couple of Dual-Builds lined up with Jean-Luc - I know, it sounds a joke just saying it with the speed he builds! But they do depend on what's on the horizon - other than the Hs 126, I'm not really planning beyond my current Flitzer and Laté in order to keep the workbench clear for arrivals. The Halberstadt would be nice, but it's obviously lower priority. All the best Rowan
