A brief history of Werner's Wings
Floyd Werner of Werners Wings is a fairly new aftermarket resin and decal company. And in the past year many new products were released for the Cobra and OH-58D Kiowa Warrior including decals.
Werner Wings came about while Floyd was looking to build the AH-1F Cobra. At the time Cobra Company and Fireball Modelworks made resin aftermarket parts but none of which Floyd was looking for. So he decided join the aftermarket ranks and help out the helicopter modeling community. He has also won countless awards in both regional and national shows and most recently Squadron/Signal Publications published his book “OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Walk Around.”
History
The M260 is a seven tube launcher that fires a 2.75 inch rocket. Not only is it mounted on the AH-1F Cobra it can also be found on the OH-58DKiowa Warrior and Apache attack helicopter. The main components consists of the following:
- Rocket Tubes: Hold rockets in launcher for transport and firing.
- Skin: Holds rocket tubs together in launcher.
- Suspension Lugs: Attach launcher to aircraft for transport.
- Fusing Connectors: Allows fusing capabilities for more accurate delivery of ordnance.
- Firing Connectors: Connects electrical power from aircraft to launcher.
The M260 is a reusable unit, but not repairable.
Product Review
In the set we’ll be reviewing the 1:48th M260 Seven Shot Rocket Pods (item no. 48-03). It is packaged in a 4 x 6 clear zip-lock baggie and comprises a single page instruction sheet and two M260 seven shot rocket pods
The two pods are molded in light cream colored resin. The pour blocks are attached to the underside of the pods and are easily removed by scoring both side and snapping them off followed by some light sanding. There are four pre-drilled holes on the top side of the rocket pods, two for the mounting points and two for the electrical connections for firing off the rockets. In the instruction you’ll find that Floyd also provided the measurements for the wires.
Level of detail is great, the diameter on each end of both pods are perfectly round. I found no sink marks, pin holes or warping.
The instruction sheet also includes 3 black & white, two of which are close-ups of the pods mounted and the electrical connections points. According to the instructions this set is designed to fit a variety of 1:48th Cobra kits and the AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter.
While using your M260 rocket pods, you should also consider using the
AH-1F IPS & Debris Deflector set (item no. 48-01) to further upgrade and detail your Cobra. And lastly each pod had data stenciling through out, Floyd suggests going over to Joe Osborn's site www.fireballmodels.info. There you’ll find the decals needed for the pod armaments.
Conclusion
Although he’s retired from the Army, Floyd still can be found in the air. He is currently flying for the Baltimore Police Department in an EC-120 Eurocopter. During his 21 years of service Floyd flew multiple tours in Iraq, Bosnia, Korea, and Germany under the canopies of the Kiowa Warrior and Cobra. So if you’re ever in the Baltimore area be sure to look up and give a wave to Floyd, I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.
I’d like to give thanks to Floyd for giving us the samples for review on AeroScale.
