I’m known among my modeling friends for having something of a fondness for older (or as I like to think, classic) kits, all very well however this can create a problem if, as I did, two maybe even three years ago now, you pick up a kit from eBay, that has a damaged canopy, something not easily repaired! My answer was to first try to repair the canopy, which didn’t work out to well, then I bought another Magister as there are three decal options and I tried to use the second canopy as a mould to try to vac form one for my original Magister. All very well until I cracked the second canopy as I tried to make a casting of it! (All this and I hadn’t yet built a vac form machine!)
Fast forward to 2010, and I spot that Pavla are releasing a cockpit set that includes a vac form canopy, which is brilliant news for me and my two previously unbuildable Magisters. Pavla were good enough to send over three sets - #72090 a full cockpit and canopy, #72058 a pair of seats, and #72-72 the canopy only.
Even better, is that Ravla were good enough to pass on these sets to Rowan for a review, who in turn sent them to me after I mentioned my Magister canopy woes!
What’s in the box?
In set #72090 there's an extremely well detailed cockpit tub, seats including moulded-in seatbelts (and don’t forget the Magister was not equipped with ejector seats), a replacement rear deck that has the nicely detailed radio gear, dashboard that once painted up will look great under that big greenhouse canopy and finally the oxygen bottles, that on the real aircraft look for all the world like a pair of scuba tanks!
In conclusion
As someone who is well known for liking to build older (or classic!) kits, any aftermarket manufacturer that makes sets like this for out of production kits gets a big thumbs up from me, and of course I now don’t need to build a vac form machine simply to finish these two Magisters in my stash.
