Introduction
Werner Wings just announced a new walk around CD. Their latest photo reference CD covers a very nice selection of the short bodied Hueys. The CD contains 25 folders totaling 3.73 Gb. of hundreds of large images in high resolution photos. Broken down into individual files, each folder is titled to include the model and serial number of the Huey.
Short Bodied Huey
Bell’s UH-1B/C Hueys were made famous during the Vietnam war. Transport versions of the UH-1 were known as "Slicks" They were generally armed with an M-60 machine guns operated by a door gunner on a fixed mount covering fire for troops.
The UH-1B was upgraded to the UH-1C for the sole purposes of a dedicated gunship.
It’s main armament system included two M-60 machine guns mounted outside of the cargo door, for a total of four, and the existing eight-round rocket packs. A cockpit-mounted sight enabled the pilots to aim and fire the weapons.
The last variant of short bodied Hueys the Army bought was the “UH-1M”. They were either newly built or conversion from the UH-1C’s. They were fitted with the "Iroquois Night Fighter And Night Tracker “ sensor system with a low-light-level TV and a searchlight, plus an M-21 gun system.
US Air Force "UH-1F" is a derivative of the UH-1B. It was tasked to perform missile site support duties. Over time a number of UH-1F were built as or converted to "UH-1P". The P was designated for psychological warfare rotorcraft which carried loudspeakers over the jungles in Vietnam to call on the enemy to surrender.
The “UH-1L” was a US Navy helicopter which was basically a UH-1E. They were equipped with a rescue hoist and intake particle screen. Later on during the Vietnam war these helicopters were modified with weapons and armor and were fitted to carry 500 lbs. bombs.
The CD
I was quite impressed with the selection of reference material found in each of the folders, most of which you won't find available in any book or on-line.
Designed for the modeler, it’s packed full of great detailed shots taken in various locations through out the Huey.
The Hueys listed in this CD:
- UH-1A
- UH-1B
- UH-1F
- UH-1L
- UH-1M
- UH-1P
Also included are shots of the cockpit, doors, armament, engines and even the skids just to name a few.
The CD comes in a standard clear jewel case with a cover sheet insert. Another nice feature is that the label burned into the CD.
All of the photographs were taken Ray Wilhite (Rotorwash) a regular on Aircraft Resource Center and it was his idea of putting together the CD with the help of Floyd Werner.
Be sure to add this title into your reference library as I recommend it highly. It will also come handy when building your next Huey model.
