Macchi C.202 Folgore Cockpit

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

SBS Model have released the latest in their excellent range of cockpit upgrades in the shape of a beautifully detailed "office" for Hasegawa's 1:48 Macchi C.202.

The set follows SBS Model's now established formula with a core of resin parts backed up by a brass fret and accompanying film. Everything arrives in a tough and attractive little end-opening box, with the parts further protected in zip-lock bags. The upgrade comprises:

10 x resin parts
23 x brass parts
1 x printed film for the instrument faces

The detail on the resin parts is quite superb and the casting on the review sample is flawless. Obviously the set shares a lot in common with SBS Model's earlier Velto cockpit, but there are subtle differences, particularly on the sidewalls which match my reference photos very well.

The one-piece floor features an elaborate tubular mount for the pilots seat, and is further detailed with separate heel plates (brass), a new control column and seat levers, plus the only part to survive from Hasegawa's original cockpit - the rudder bar.

The instrument panel, which is a multi-layer affair with a resin backing part, films for the instruments and finally etched fascias. The etched parts also provide a trim wheel, switches and levers to dot around the cockpit for a nice busy appearance, plus new rear armour onto which attach brass straps for the top of pilot's harness. The latter are a little unusual to modellers unused to SBS Model's style, because they join onto a nicely modelled harness cast onto the seat itself. This split approach works well for me, because the integral seat belts are finely detailed and realistically draped - all they need are careful painting.

The assembly diagrams are clearly drawn and break the construction down into 7 stages. The cockpit looks quite straightforward for anyone with a little experience of mixed-media upgrades. When it comes to colours, the instructions are very helpful with a painting guide for every part, complete with FS matches for the overall colours.

Conclusion
SBS Model's Macchi C.202 cockpit is a real little gem. The parts are a massive improvement over Hasegawa's originals and the set is thoroughly recommended to breathe new life into the quarterscale Folgore.

Please remember, when contacting retailers or manufacturers, to mention that you saw their products highlighted here - on AEROSCALE.

I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
