It's back to business as usual in the March/April edition of Windsock International after last time's Wingnuts Special.
Along with the regulars such as Readers' Gallery, Frontline News and Supply Lines, the magazine features 8 pages of reviews, with a detailed look at Karaya's Halberstadt Cl.IV (including the thorny issue of whether it should have dihedral on the lower wings or not) and Fly's Roland D.VIa. Eduard's reissued 1:48 Albatros D.III and a 1:72 AEG G.IV from Choroszy Modelbud are among the many other new kits reviewed.
The feature articles include something to interest everyone in a really mixed blend:
Lance Krieg's Modelling Masterclass Pt. 3 takes a look at superdetailing cockpits, and some of the examples on display from a number of world-class modellers are truly astonishing. There is some fantastic work to inspire us all.
Blue Max "Pfalzen"! looks at the replica Pfalzs built for the movie in 1965, along with the recent Encore Models kit.
Halberstadt Heads' Up is a timely walkaround of the Cl.IV which will be very useful for modellers of the Karaya kit, and the article is followed by a trio of excellent Ronnie Bar profiles.
Rara Avis looks at the Gotha WD.14 seaplane, with period photos and previously unpublished 1:72 plans of the aircraft by the late Ian Stair. Meanwhile a follow-up to an earlier article in the series presents a new set of photos of the Albatros G.II/G.III, including an excellent cockpit view of the latter.
Lastly, there's a look at Jason Petroelje's beautiful reproduction Macchi M.5 seaplane. I have to admit this just makes me drool with envy - the idea of flying this at Ryde Esplanade would be glorious!
Conclusion
I've just scraped the surface of another Windsock issue that's packed with material to interest all WW1 aviation modellers and enthusiasts. Its amazing that the work done originally by the late Doug Bianchi on the building of the Pfalz replicas still survives after all this time. Mr. Bianchi passed away in 1977.
