Bf 109F-4 Trop Decals

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

The Messerschmitt Bf 109F is certainly back in the limelight this year following the release of two new kits in 1:48 and 1:32 by Zvezda and Hasegawa respectively. Both should signal the start of extended ranges of models, and Eagle Editions have been quick to mark the renewed interest in the Friedrich with the first of what also promises to be a very interesting new decal series available in both scales.

Sheet #EC130 offers a selection of four desert schemes for the Bf 109F-4 Trop.:

1. White 1, W.Nr. 10117, flown by Lt. Albert Helm, 4./JG 3, San Pietro, Feb. 1942
2. Yellow 3 W.Nr. unknown, flown by Uffz. Franz Schwaiger, 6./JG 3, San Pietro, Feb. 1942
3. Black ˂II, W.Nr. unknown, Stab II./JG 27, Libya, Feb. 1942
4. Yellow 10, W.Nr. unknown, Stab II./JG 27

Eagle Editions have kindly provided a sample of the 1:32 release, in which the decals arrive spread across two sheets, custom printed by Cartograf with their usual precision. The registration is basically perfect on the sample and the thin, glossy items have excellent colour depth and crystal clear carrier film. The decals replace all the kit items, with new personal and unit insignia, full national markings, plus a comprehensive set of servicing stencils and data-plates.

The schemes are illustrated in full-colour with high quality profiles, plus simpler top and bottom views. Each aircraft is described concisely, listing any distinguishing features along with the camouflage colours and sizes of national markings.

A full-page guide is included to aid placing the stencils. Slightly disconcertingly, Eagle Editions seem to have used their existing diagram of a Bf 109G and one or two of the stencils are labelled specifically for Bf 109G/K use, so it may be wise to double-check their suitability for the Friedrich.

Conclusion
New EagleCals are always something to look forward to, combining excellent research with top quality printing. EC130 is no exception and (along with its stablemate EC 131) offers some very attractive alternative colour schemes. Highly recommended.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
