Until now, Eduard's growing range of Brassin accessories have largely slipped by me because they've been mostly for modern subjects, but I was quick to latch onto their replacement Bf 110 wheels when they were announced recently.
The set arrives in a clear plastic blister pack, with the parts held safely in place with a piece of foam. The set comprises 4 x resin parts, plus a sheet of kabuki tape painting masks and a small set of instructions.
The new wheels are really superb. They appear to be produced using CAD technology, so are extremely precise and are cast perfectly with separate inner hub inserts. The wheels have a minimal casting block to remove, while the hubs have a pretty hefty one - really a job for a fine razor saw. The detail is exquisite; the tyres capture the delicate raised lines of the real thing, running around the circumference and across the diameter, which are so hard to reproduce convincingly in styrene, while the hubs are equally good, with crisp detail and a finely moulded brake-line, and there's a notch to ensure the separate inserts line up property.
Including paint masks is really a very neat touch, and the instructions usefully show the correct angle of the hubs in relation to the gear legs.
Conclusion
It all adds to a very complete package, and they are without a doubt the best Bf 110 wheels I've seen in this scale. Strangely, Eduard only recommend them for their own series of Bf 110 kits, but I see no reason why they aren't equally suitable for any quarterscale model of the aircraft. The only way I could see them being improved is if they were moulded "weighted" (I know from working on the exhibit at RAF Hendon what a hefty beast the '110 is) - but that's a purely subjective view, and not every modeller likes "weighted" wheels. Highly recommended.
