introduction
When I saw that the Sea Lynx was being released in 1/32, and the colourful special scheme that was being supplied I just had to get it.
I built the two 1/72 Airfix versions of the Lynxs soon after they came out in the 1970's and for their time they were very good kits. But this kit is on a whole different level to the ancient Airfix releases in 1/72.
OK, on to the inbox review for your perusal.
The kit comes in the usual colourful Revell end opening box, which, again as per usual for Revell, is not very strong and only good wrapping in bubble wrap prevented mine from being crushed worse than it was.
What's in the box.
- four sealed polybags, which is lucky as a number of
parts decided to eject from the sprues in transit,
- a 19 page instruction booklet,
- a large decal sheet with decals for two German Sea
Lynxs,
- and the usual Revell warnings and disclaimer booklet.
There are thirteen sprues in white plastic and three in clear for a total of approximately 309 parts.
The instructions are the usual Revell fare with nice clear black and white illustrations for the 97 steps. Some of the steps are a bit busy so care will need to be taken you don't miss a decal or colour call-out or a part..
Paint listing is of Revell's own colours. No surprise there. I have used Revell's enamel paints and they cover well. A mask is supplied in the painting guide to help you mask the helicopter if you decide to do the special scheme. It doesn't look too scary, but there are lots and lots of extra decals. Comprehensive stencil markings are provided. Decals are beautifully printed and appear to be in register.
On to the plastic.
The seat belts are moulded on the seat faces so you will either want to remove them and put your own on the seats or carefully paint them.
There is a full interior with the following features
- Full avionics and sensor racks,
- An extra crew seat can be installed for a gunner,
- Instrument panel and consoles use raised detail and
decals. Should look very nice with a little
dry-brushing to pop out the detail
There are no engines in the kit but there are fan faces and the back of the engine's exhaust stages are included, so no unsightly see-through engine bays.
You need to drill quite a few holes in the load area floor and bottom skin depending on which version you are constructing.
The main cabin doors are moulded separately as are the cockpit doors which can be posed open if you desire, and with all that nice cockpit detailing making it easy to display is another great idea.
Main rotor head appears to be well detailed and the Tail Rotor is moulded one piece.
And the things that go BANG!!
A nicely detailed door gun is included with a well detailed mount.
Full weapon racking, two Sea Skua missiles and two torpedoes are included. Missiles and torpedoes have stencils and full painting instructions.
There are many many reference pictures available on the www and you could easily maker a show stopper from this kit.
There are some
fantastic reference photos of the special colour scheme aircraft here all of which are copyright to the author.
I got mine from Relish Models in the UK for under 15 pounds which is amazing value for what you get.
Please remember, when contacting retailers or manufacturers, to mention that you saw their products highlighted here - on
