History
The roll of single seat fighters grew into multioperational duties. These were first developed to answer the threat of enemy aircraft by intercepting them and preventing them from reporting back with photos and information on German troop movements in 1914-1916. But later in the war they were given increased responsibilities and served in not only defensive rolls, but in aggresive patrols into areas well behind the enemy lines.

Digging back to 1978 we come across one of the better references designed for the amature historian and modeler on the subject of WWI British aviation units. The author is Mr. Alex Revell and its is still available on Amazon. This book lends to accurate and well written historical text but also includes the organizational facts on the first units by tables in the appendices.
