F-4 Air Conditioning Intakes
F-4 Phantom Air Conditoning Intake scoops

The F-4 Phantom's air conditioning system used two small intake scoops, which were mounted on either side of the nose just behind the radome.

First impressions

These intakes are drop-fit replacements for the Academy kit parts

Air conditioning intakes

Moulding these intakes from injection plastic has historically been difficult due to their small size and thickness which approached the limits to which plastic can be formed economically. Resin is capable of holding thin detail much better.

These scoops are made to be glued directly in place of the Academy kit parts. Once freed from their moulding plinths and cleaned up, mounting them in place will be simplicity itself.

update from the manufacturer

Since posting this review, I have been contacted by Hypersonic models who have explained a few matters. In Hypersonic's words "The intake part in the kit is overly simplified/incorrect in shape and also in the wrong location, hence the rather odd looking insert piece on my part that fills the recess in the fuselage and has the corrected intake sitting on top."

Very interesting AM upgrade for the Academy F4. I was curious to see if there was enough difference for me to consider ordering a set, and there is. The lip of the intake is finer, and looks like it's recessed deeper then the kit part. There seems to also be a difference in the shape of the rear of the A/C scoops. The kit parts are basically cylindrical, while the Hypersonic scoops have a dip to a narrowing towards the rear. I went to their site to see what the total cost would be including shipping. $11.50. That's a little too steep for me for just two small intake scoops. SO I'll see if I can any better via my favorite online stores or even on ebay. Joel
