Phabulous Phantom

  • move
History
Developed from the underwhelming McDonnell Demon, the Phantom II was to become a game-changer in both the US Navy, and the US Air Force. Later models went on to serve in 12 major Air Forces throughout the Western world, and became the most widely produced Western fighter aircraft during the Cold War. Comedian Bob Hope once quipped that the Phantom was the "World's leading distributor of MiG parts".

The Phantom first entered squadron service in 1960, and remains in service in several Air Forces to this day.
The Model
The model is Academy's superlative F-4B finished in the colours of VF-111 Sundowners.

About Jim Major (jfmajor60)
FROM: PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES

I've been building models since I was about 7 years old the first was an Adam West Batman figure, that I built with my dad. I took a 10 yr. break from the hobby from 2000-2010 but I have been going strong since then. I build aircraft primarily but I'll dabble in other subjects occasionally.

"Can anyone show me a picture of this aircraft showing me those prominent panel lines as I can't find one?" Cheers

Awesome looking Rhino, Jim. This photo here is an excellent case study in the weathering of F-4's. Yes, they do get nasty. Best wishes, Ian

Scott, There are plenty of pictures of operational F-4s with visible panel lines, plus faded paint, dirt, grime, etc. Here's 3 pictures including one of the bottom: And here' my Academy 1/48 scale F-4B. As you can see the panel lines are also quite visible. Joel

James, Just a rock solid build. One just can't have enough Phantoms. Joel

Joel, I agree with you, that's what the pictures I posted were intended to demonstrate. I was responding to Warren's post questioning the dark panel lines. The quotation marks should have been obvious, I would have thought. Guess I should have been more explicit. Your pics show it even better than mine, but of course the last one of the F-4 underside doesn't count as it is a British bird (that's intended as levity). BTW: nice kit yourself, well done. Cheers, Scott

Scott, my apologies for getting the posts and names confused. I claim old age and poor eyesight. BTW, Hogan Heros was one of my favorite tv shows. Joel

No worries, Joel. It was a good thing, your pics were better than mine to make the point. "I see nuh-thing!"
