1⁄35To Pre-Shade or Not To Pre-Shade?
Conclusion
I am happy that, if done carefully this method of pre-shading dark
colors will definitely work. It is getting the look that I have in my head onto the model that is illusive. The Hurricane and Typhoon are close but there isn't quite enough variation in the hue for it to be sufficiently noticeable. I do think that priming with white might be part of the answer. It could lighten the
colors, without mixing white into them and enable the changing hues to be seen more readily.
To achieve this affect on very dark colors, Dark blues and black would require a slightly different technique. I have not tried it yet but from what I have learned so far, pre-shading would not be worthwhile. The very dark
colors negate the affect, however it should be possible to apply the paint in such a way that lighter and darker areas can be produced. Whether or not this is desirable is for you to decide. This is just a taster, I hope to be able to improve on what I have achieved so far. This has been some tome in the writing and during that time I think I might have sussed the answer. Part of it is the white primer, until I'm in work and can therefore warrant buying another can of primer; I will have to work with the
gray. The other part I will leave for an update to this when and if it works. I would love to here anyone's thoughts or comments on pre-shading.
