Nürnberg Toy Fair Report 2014
It's been four weeks now since the doors of the 2014 edition of the Nürnberg Toy Fair have been closed. Once again, here is our annual report of the event. As always it is focused on aircraft related items since this is the main subject of Aeroscale. A lot has been already published elsewhere and though the report may not reveal any new information it can nevertheless represent an interesting read because it covers most of the manufacturers present there. Despite the fact that there was no "Big Aircraft Announcement" this time, there was plenty of new stuff to see and there is also a lot to look forward to in 2014 and beyond. All the scales and all era and subjects were represented so there is a little something for everyone.

The "Star" of this year's Toy Fair was the F-35. There was no spectacular big scale kit of the Lightning II to drool over but instead the Lockheed Martin aircraft was almost present in every booth. The 70th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion (D-Day) was also a subject matter and a lot of special boxings have been prepared for this event but sadly not so many "New Tool" items. Strangely, the 100th anniversary of the First World War (1914-1918) wasn't as popular amongst the manufacturers. I suppose that economical considerations have priority.

I wrote last year that it was more and more fun to attend the Toy Fair. Not only because it is a pleasure to meet my IPMS Friends (Daniela, Volker and Steffen) and share some nice diners with them, but also because we see a lot a friendly faces in the manufacturer's booths. This year, for the first time, some people in the industry gave Steffen and myself some "insider infos". Sadly we can't reveal anything we know but this a great vote of confidence from them to Aeroscale and IPMS Germany. So let me add something: our hobby is not dead and we can expect some interesting releases in the coming years. Our stashes sure won't diminish anytime soon!

For a list of what is scheduled for 2014, please take a look at the IPMS Deutschland News List which is probably the most up to date around the web.

Hi Jean-Luc Nice report! My dream is one day to get to the show with you and Steffen! I have to admit though that most of this year's line-up is more a case of "interesting" than "*******!!!!!!" for me. There are a couple of items that certainly caught my eye - undoubtedly the same ones as you - well, we always say we're twins! It's amazing that, this year of all years, WW1 wasn't more prominent at the show. We can hardly escape it on TV in the UK at the moment, so I guess the first "world" war is anything but in terms of worldwide marketing... You had me worried with one remark: "Our stashes sure won't diminish anytime soon!" - That's just as I'm finally beginning to make good on my promised to start building again, not adding! All the best Rowan

Hi Rowan, as for WW1. I think J-L has a blind side on anything (or everything) not 48 scale. There are the nice MB 72 scale Lozenge-Tanks and figure sets from several companies in 35 scale. Also it is very prominent in the Eduard catalogue. The SSW is new and news will come out over the coming years (august 1914 only marked the start of ww1). in general: Nuremberg only marks the start of the modelling year. The Japanese companies have two more shows to present news, in Shizuoka and Tokio. BTW I do not think Hasegawas Camel was their last adventure in that scale and theme (and their news schedule was pretty slim). Also the Chinese Companies seem to have a strong competition among each other. I have to admit that I do not fully understand which of them are connected. But this leads to some companies only publish news when the kit is ready. OTOH I also do not see that "Hammer news" but I am looking forward to the 48 scale Bf 109G, Do 215, Tornado and some other stuff. IMHO this "lack of news" might be a problem of customers having all and everything and waiting for their personal "Fairley Fruitbat Mk.Ic beta testing"... just my 2 ct all the best Steffen

Hi Steffen As I've said before, I think they've missed a huge trick by not doing a new-tool Camel in 1:32. But I live in hope... All the best Rowan

Jean-Luc Formery, thanks so much for taking the time to write this very detailed summation of the toy fair, and to Jessica for her usual excellent editing job. I've found more then just a few new releases in 1/48 scale to keep me checking the new items and arrivals at my two online resources. Here's my top 5: Academy: 1/48 scale F4C Phantom Italeri: 1/48 scale RF-4E Phantom Italeri: 1/48 scale H-21 Shawnee "Flying Banana" Revell: 1/48 scale PBY-5A Catalina Trumpeter:1/48 scale A-37B Dragonfly Joel

Hi again Steffen I forgot to say, I'm also really looking forward to the ICM Do 215 - I can't understand the "What? Never heard of it..." reaction from some quarters (of course, the very same who complain about the "same old, same old" in their next breathe!). It looks absolutely superb. I'll be buying it - and its more famous stablemates that will undoubtedly follow. All the best Rowan
