HeritageCon
The HeritageCon Model Show is an event organized by the IPMS Hamilton Model Club. The club makes its home in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, located at the Western shore of Lake Ontario. Each year the club hosts this show and it is one of the larger events in scale modeling in Canada. This event is the club’s fundraising activity for the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWHM), which is where they are fortunate enough to meet and have their regular meetings.
2014 show
This year saw the eighth HeritageCon show held on Sunday the 9th of March in one of the museum hangars at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Ontario. Numerous vendors were on hand selling all forms of modelling related items as well as books and artistic works. Lets also not forget about the opportunity to look at some 1:1 scale aircraft.

A major part of the show program is the chance for modellers to enter, display and have their models judged in the hope that their work would be recognized and receive an award. There were 10 major competition categories available including Aircraft, Military Vehicles, Automotive, Ships, Figures, Dioramas, Paper Models, Miscellaneous, Junior and Bantam. Each of these was in turn further subdivided into 70 individual subcategories. The number of subcategories varied from category to category but for each a first, second and third prize award was available. This year there were also eight special categories where the prize was a distinctive trophy. There were no less than 16 subcategories devoted to Aircraft related subjects and one to aircraft dioramas.

While official statistics were not available during the preparation of this Feature, casual observations and comments by a few show officials to this writer were offered. According to one show official, approximately 400 models were entered while another was quoted as saying by his count, there were 450 entries. These two also estimated that there were between 150 and 175 entrants. Speculation as to the number of visitors that attended the show weren’t available. However, this writer observed that the two normal parking lots used for the show were insufficient for the attending crowds. The CWHM had to use their extensive tarmac in front of their hangars to accommodate the overflow. It was also suggested that perhaps this was a reflection of the relatively decent weather that day, as opposed to the messy days they’d seen in previous years.

Of particular interest to Aeroscale visitors is the fact that he Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum were pleased to announce that they will be flying their prized Avro Lancaster to England this August for a month long visit. The Lancaster will join the only other airworthy Lancaster in the world, owned and operated by the Royal Air Force's renowned Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), and participate in several events and activities while overseas. Further information about the tour can be found on the CWH website.

Some images of the Lancaster under overhaul at the time of the show, as well as other aircraft, are included with the show images.

My thanks to the various members of the show for assisting in the preparation of this feature.

About Jan Etal (tread_geek)
FROM: ONTARIO, CANADA

I've been building models since about age 10 with the occasional hiatus due to real life events. First armour model was a 1/76 Airfix Tiger I and was followed by a 1/72 Revell F4U Corsair. I've built primarily 1/76 and 1/72 armour and aircraft but occasionally have tinkered in other larger scales....

Thanks for getting this one up, Jessie. The show was extremely busy and it was very difficult to get near many of the models due to the crowds. Also, several categories were positively loaded with entries, the rotorcraft especially (almost barren last year). Thanks, Jan

It looks like it was a really nice show. Thanks for sharing.

Russ, Thanks for posting and indeed it is one of the larger shows in Canada. Another great thing is that half the hanger where it is held has a great selection of 1:1 scale aircraft to amaze a visitor. You also might be interested to know that all the real aircraft that you see in the pictures that are seen at the end are being restored to flying condition. To me the most amazing new addition is the Avenger torpedo bomber. For a single engine aircraft it is absolutely HUGE! Cheers, Jan

Good job! Some really nice work displayed. What a great place to have a model show and club. Must be a beautiful museum. There is a somewhat smaller restoration museum about a 2 hour drive from my home and it's my favorite museum because they will let you visit the assembly shop which is great for details.

Jack, Thanks for your comment and the museum is quite something. The main hangar of the show usually houses about 20 or more aircraft in one side and then another 15 or so in the the other but not including aircraft being restored. The Lancaster takes up about a quarter of 1/5th of one side of a hangar (it's that big, the hangar that is). Cheers, Jan

Really some excellent modeling, especially those helicopters. From what I remember of my contest years, any category that was scarcely entered usually got bombarded with entries the following year. I guess that's just human nature. Joel

Joel, You couldn't be more right!!! In fact, I personally persuaded a fellow from the local IPMS club to enter his Mi-8 and Black Shark choppers as last year there were only four entries is the Rotorcraft category. Imagine his and my surprise when we saw the number of choppers already there! They had to enlarge the category area to almost twice its orignal size. I believe that this was a record year for the show as far as entries and visitors go. Several categories had to be split into two due to the number of entries in them! Cheers, Jan
