G'day,
This 48 scale subject is not, Eduard or Hasegawa, but a state of the Art 1963 Monogram, reboxed in 1973 as the pic shows, I obtained this kit several years ago just before the Eduard kit was released here.
I did build the Eduard kit as a Magazine Review at the time, but just recently decided to buid he Monogram P 400 version, completly OOB and acording to te paints used in the instruction sheet.
Humbrol enamels are used on this subject, [with exception of the wing tips, as they are Tamiya X2 Gloss White], the so called Yellow Zinc Chromate is #81, Sky Blue is #65, Earth is #119 and Dark Green is #117.
I tried to replicate faded paint work on the canvas by adding a few drops of #34 Matt White to the left over paint mix.
After first painting the wing tips and masking off when dry, the Sky Blue was applied and masked off with a combination of Maskol, Tamiya tape and wax proof paper.
The removable kit panels, gun bay and engine covers, had been tacked in place along with the door and canopy roof section, for the cockpit.
The Earth was applied to the upper surfaces and along the demarcation lines of the fuselage, when almost dry the Dark green was applied, when dry the aeas were masked off to expose the canvas and retouched with the toned down shades.
This cam scheme is applied free hand.

It's looking real good. I built one of those Monogram Airacobras last year. I should have went with the Eduard kit, but I paid just three dollars for the Monogram kit, so what the heck, right?
Great job!

In spite of it's age it can still be built up into a great finished model. I have built three, the last one in Soviet markings. True, the trailing edges are thick and you need to rescribe it but with some work it can still come out looking great.
Yours is coming along very well

Hello Rob,
Whatever became of your Monogram P-39? I am currently building one as well for the "Rumble in the East Asia Sky" as an Aleutian Islands based aircraft. I am at the point of applying a gloss prior to the decals.
Sincerely,
Brian

Looks great, one of my favourites of the old Monogram kits- second only to the TBD Devastator kit.

Yes, despite its age (raised panel lines, thick plastic), it is still a well regarded kit. The only 1/48 offering for decades, there hadn't been much to improve on. Today's CAD trumpts it, but at what cost?
I have one under way for PTO, Aira Cutie, started before the campaign. Since reading Osprey's Soviet Lend-Lease Fighter Aces I have been intending to build a VVS version. I also snared Hasegawa's P-400 for 50%-off at the Roanoke IPMS show last year.
In the words of Homer Simpson, Cobras!

Brian,
I got my P 39 to this stage and due to a couple of problems at home [a few months ago now], I had to leave this poor bird in it's unfinished state.
The markings are not the kit offering, but are from the Eagle Strike 'Venomous Cobras of the World' # IP4801.
I have the intention of doing 2 more Airacobra's in the next 12 - 18 months, in both RAAF and RAF markings, using the Eduard kits.

Hello 29Foxtrot,
Your kit is looking nice. P-39's seem in their element with a shark mouth. I'm sorry you have not been able to finish the kit. I hope you can sooner rather than later. I applied a gloss coat to mine last night and I hope to apply decals today. Mine won't be as colorful as yours I'm afraid. Aleutian aircraft were rather plain. Thanks again for your reply.
Sincerely,
Brian
