Hi Allen

I'm conscious that I want to avoid hijacking this thread but on the engines I found that my smallest drill bit at .5mm was too big so I tried to CA the wires on the flush surface. This was ok until I tried to fix the wires to the cyclinders at which point they all starting to detach themselves.

I have since got hold of a .3 mm drill bit that seems more suitable to the task and I have drilled all the way through the cyclinders so when attaching I can use longer wires to relieve the stress on the fixed part.

I'm hoping this strategy will work better than the few attempts I've had so far. I have the cable and a good set of cable strippers so fingers crossed.

Great. I hope it goes better for you this time. My experience was in no way perfect where everything worked exactly as planned, but I image the drilled holes will lead to much better results. I can't wait to hear how it goes...
Good luck!

Slow and steady wins the race...

All I have done of late is prepare the pilot for painting. Now I just need to get some good pictures to suggest colors, etc. beyond the tamiya directions. Any help?

PS He came for the P-51 kit and is very nicely molded...

Hope all is well.

Also the eduard pe scissors (I think they are called??) are quite nice. Picture... (The White Balance is off - they are silver)

Yup, scissors. I have also heard them referred to as torque links since they prevent the strut from turning. Want to keep those wheels straight.

And the struts on your P-47 look absolutely fantastic. Such attention to detail. Like modifying the gun sight and adding the internal ducting for the turbo charger. Incredible.

Thanks Matt, I appreciate it. I put on a primer coat this weekend and am currently working on fixing a few little spots, but hope that some good progress is approaching.

Hi Allen
Hope you don't mind but I have a question or two?
For my next aircraft project (once a RNZAF p40 is completed, slowly, very slowly)I 'm going to do an RNZAF F4U Corsair, what size bit do you use to drill the engine out? and the size of wire you fitted?
I'm learning always learning and asking questions

thanks in advance

Hopefully I can answer some of this

I believe the wire is 30 gauge wrapping wire.

As for drill size I have used a .30mm drill bit (smallest I have).

Chris,

Gary is right. It is 30 gauge wrapping wire. Here is a link of what I bought at the local electronics store. Hopefully you have something similar where you live.

As for the bit, I have a little drill and some small bits that I bought in the local hobby shop. I think the smallest bit which I used is a #80, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyway, I found that just attacking it with the drill and bit weren't giving me very good results, so before drilling, I use a sewing needle / push pin and make a little starter hole. This followed by the drill bit gave me a nice little hole to put the CAed wire into.

I hope this helps. I look forward to your corsair.

Well here is a little progress. The pilot pre-painted with about three coats of tamiya paints heavily thinned with retarder - I like this method as it is really forgiving. I still plan on giving him a coat of future, a wash, then some flat, highlights, and eyes - the dreaded eyes. We'll see how he comes out, but I think the wash will help hide some of the painting flaws. Right now it almost looks like some areas have some highlights, but from my only other figure experience (a ki-84 pilot) the gloss neutralizes a lot of that. Anyway...

Hope all is well.

I wouldn't worry about the eyes. Just use a dark wash to represent them. From a distance eyes often look like nothing more then dark slits. Good luck.

Not that it is anything earth shattering, but just to show that I have made some progress, here is a photo of where I am at. I hope to get decals on this weekend...

I hope all is well with everyone.

If you don't mind my asking, what color is, and manufacturer of, the paint you used for the upper surface. It is great.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the comments. It has definitely been a slow build, but it feels good to be making some progress and finally see the end in reach.

Nige, I am going with the markings for "Dudge" (Rarey Nose Art). Hopefully, I don't flub anything up since I'm down to about the end of that sheet.

Mike, No problem - The paint is Tamiya. The main Olive Drab is XF-62 Olive Drab and then it is faded with a heavily thinned mix of the Olive Drab and some (up to around 50%) XF-4 Yellow Green. Hope this helps.

Thanks again.

Next tiny update. Decals on. Stencils are going to be dry transfers (I hate clear decal film - example of why in a moment) so they will be put on after the flat coat. I have a busy week coming so I am not sure if the next future coat, wash, flat, etc. will take a while or not, but I am really happy to have the decals on.

Here is a close up of the cool nose art. You can see some pesky little bit of silvering, it is really not that bad, but it is there and will drive me crazy if I don't figure out how to fix it. I guess I will try poking with a sewing needle and putting more micro sol on, but I already tried that with very little success. Any other suggestions??

Thanks.

Old "Dudge" looks fabulous Allen.
Im really happy to see you progress with this after such a long build.Almost finished now and Im looking forward to seeing it done.
As for your little issue, I know how frustrating it is when you pick up on something and it bugs the sh*t out of you, when noone else would even know anything was wrong. It happens to me on every build without fail.
Personally, I cant see anything in the photo that wont dissapear under another Klear/Future coat and the washes etc. It certainly wont do any harm to slice the decal and add some more micro-sol. Id use a brand new scalpel blade rather than a needle though.
The fact that you have a busy week coming up will actualy help. Micro sol it, and leave it for a few days

Thanks Nige. Great comments / advice / words of wisdom. Looking at it closely this morning, I see that you are right and it really isn't a big deal at normal size with your normal eyes (cameras and the person who actually built it pick up and exaggerate everything??). I will try the new scalpel trick, put it aside for awhile and hopefully be completely happy with it by time I get to the next coat of future.

I just wanted so badly for it to be perfect... Oh well...
