I was able to pick up Revell's kit of this aircraft at the local flea market . It has been a long time since I done any WW2 fighter and why I don't buy Revell kits . The moldings are from their first release . Rivet counters will like this one . Every thing will be sanded done smooth and redone .My question is : is there any after market parts for the cockpit , wheel wells , and wheels for this bird ? and maybe a new canopy as well .
Thanks for help on this matter .

Kick that thing back to the flea market and get yourself Academy's P-38 + True Details' Cockpit + Resin wheels.

Hi Terri

Well, I did not have that kit and personally I prefer the Hasegawa (which has it's problems ... as the Academy kit too). Raised panel lines are just not my cup of tea. In general Monogram kits are pretty good researched and fit the shape of the original good. You often get several variants in a box.

As for after market parts I fear you will have to rely on old stuff like TD or make newer sets for Hasegawa or Academy fit your model. There is pretty much out there. Just have a look at Hannants, Modelimex .. (place favorite online shop here) online catalogues.

greets

Steffen

Jacqueline : I would kick it back to the flea-market in a heart beat , but I only paid 12 bucks for it so it wasn't that much of a loss . I will do some hunting for the TD sets for this bird .

Steffen , Always nice to hear from you , I'm not much for raised panel lines and other surface detail . It will all be sanded down and resribed with only the revites being drilled in key areas .

Thank you both for your comments , my hunt begins .

Hello Terri,

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with the kit it just came from a different era. Even so it can still be a goodlooking model. Aftermarket wise there is some but not much made for the Revell/Monogram P-38J
Wheel well interior, you’re out of luck (actually I do not know of any wheel interior for any P-38 kit). Your only option is scratch building but two other items exist for your kit.

Squadron Products USA Stock No: SQ9525
P-38J Lightning Vacuform Canopy. 2 pieces. For Monogram kit.

True Details USA Stock No: TD48063
P-38 Lightning Wheels. Resin. Two (2) main & one (1) nose wheels. Checkerboard Tread. For any version.

Sincerely,
Brian

Thanks for the info Brain . I've been doing some looking as well and there is no sets for the wheel wells at all out there . Being some what surprised that this is a popular subject among modelers .

Some times those bargains will prove to be very costly, after you factor in all the time wasted correcting everything.

If you do proceed with the Revellogram kit, you'll need to be careful fitting the nose hatches. I had the devil's own time getting them to sit right. Of course being all thumbs doesn't help much…
I've built one of Academy's P-38s and really enjoyed it. I used the True Details cockpit and wheels on it. The cockpit as it comes in the kit is definitely NOT an improvement over Monogram's kit (decal for the IP?!?!).
This is Academy's Pathfinder version. I couldn't find any photos of the RADAR Operator's station so I just used some bits from the spares box (a modified B-17 seat, a Monogram P-38M RADAR console, some O2 bottles from a Monogram B-17 and some photoetch from DML's 1/72 Do 335). Of course you can't see anything in there at all.
For painting I used SnJ for the top and Modelmaster Gloss Black for the bottoms, MM WW-2 OD for the anti-glare panels and MM Faded OD for the Radome.

Howdy,

You might try Koster Aero Enterprises vac-form set for the Monogram /Revell P-38. It includes inserts for the wheel wells. Available at:

http://www.oldmodelkits.com/index.php

Hope this helps.
