Another thing for consideration - the albatros fuselage grain always ran longitudinally as this was the easiest way for the ply to bend. If the wood would be difficult to bend if trying to bend against the grain.

Um, yep, fine... bit of a shame that...

Sigh!

After the coats of Clear Orange, I will give you some close-ups.

There are many sins that need attending to first.

Cheers,

Hugh

Getting there.

We have applied a coat of Tamiya Clear Orange. And the National markings.
Nearly ready to apply our coat of red over the tail surfaces and the nose.

Some detail painting needs to be done first. I want to over paint the vents and access ports in grey before I apply the red.

Sheesh... I hate decalling!

Cheers,

Hugh

Hi Hugh , your wood grain decals turned out very well . For your clear coat of orange how many coats did you use ? Also from other builds that I have seen so far the fuselge is a warm honey . What made you go with the darker one ? I'm a little confused on this

Hi Terri,

Had to match what I had done with the interior.

That is, hide a stuff up.

Well, I have whimped out.
The Paint over Decal trick was a failure... And since this build is specifically for a comp, the only option was to strip it back... Again!... and I decided that I was better served going with the box scheme (Von Hipple).
So I had to go in search of some replacement decals for the ones that I used and then had to remove... Luckily, my local had the Limited edition (Jasta 5) on special ($30)... with masks, losenge, two sheets of markings and etch!
So I have now all the decals I shall ever need.

Here is how it stands so far.

The next part is to Losenge the wings and add the markings, finish the red borders on the tail surfaces and start wheathering...

I MUST have this complete by the 28th!

Cheers,

Hugh

Ah Hugh, always in search of perfection! I know your pain, but don't give up!

I think the decal thing can work if it is done with restraint - IMHO what I think people forget is that individual wood grains really would not be visible in 1/48 scale - the only thing really that gives the impression of wood in this scale is more the change of tone than the grains themselves.

Why not try and do the fuselage with oil paints? Lots of control and a long drying time, and with some patience, I think you can get some nice subtle wood grain effects. Worth a shot?

An Albatros just aint an Albatros without a clear varnished wood fuselage...

Well Brad, I decided not to strip it back yet again.... So it is going to finish up as Von Hipple's Mount.

Here are some shots of some new Losenge decal that I have printed and have been applying (I had a few disasters with the Eduard Decals... Very unforgiving!

There is a whole thread over on the Aerodrome discussing making our own Decals (Textured). The pattern I used was posted by our good friend Wojtek Fajda.

Hugh

Thanks Stephen.

I know that it's a bit dark on some of the colours, but I like the restrained look of it.

Well, this had to be finished by midday on the Sunday just gone.

On Friday night, I had the rib taping started... At 1.00 o'clock that night, I had it finished.

Saturday saw some patching to be done on the Lightning bolt decals, and the red outline on the tail surfaces.
I also had to get the wing and undercarraige on and rigged.
2.00 Saturday night saw the quickest rigging job I have ever done.
On sunday morning, I still did not have the undercarraige fitted... or the guns, or the exhaust.

And the prop still had to be painted!

But it all got done!

11.00 Sunday morning and I fired up the airbrush for the final coats of Matt.

Delivered the build at 11.55 (having left my Airbrush sitting in its cradle with the cup still full of Matt Varnish).

How did it do? I don't know. I placed it on the table with the rest of the Albatrosses and scarpered! The president of our club is holding onto it for me until the next meeting.

So, when I get it back, I will post some photos.

What did I learn?

1. Not to be a smart ass and just do what the instructions say.
2. Eduard decals s**k.
3. Microscale decal paper is very thick.
4. Five months is no where near long enough for a Weekend Edition Kit!

Cheers,

Hugh

How goes this project? We never got finished pics, which I understand might have to wait for a while. And how did it win/place/show?.

Can we get the files to print the woodgrain?

Hi Carl,

I have no idea how we placed. I will not be getting the build back until the third Tuesday of this month... That's the 21st... I will surely post photos then.

Yeah sure, I will post the files of all the wood grain that I tried. Some of it is originally Wojteks, but I am sure he will not mind too much... Actually, I will ask him first.

Cheers,

Hugh

Are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet....?

Sheesh... Noooooo...

But I have heard from the president that it won it's section... or so I understand from his criptic email.

Be patient. All things come to those who wait.

Hugh

Hi Guys,
I got this back tonight and ran home to take some fotygrafs for you all.

It really, if I am honest, is not finished.

It needs some washing to bring out some of the detail.

The Losenge decals are home made. The rib tapes are Techmod, but the Leading and trailing edges are sprayed onto decal paper and then cut into strips and applied.
The black shading around the ailerons is to hide where the Microscale decal paper SHRANK when I applied it. I should have anticipated this and cut over size to accomodate.

Cheers,

Hugh

Thanks Brad. I like them decals too. I will go this way again when next I build another Fokker or Alby.

Cheers,

Terri, it won the class anyway (Dunno how)... It will probably now sit an a shelf and languish. I have so many other projects that demand attention.

Cheers,

Hugh
