The other day a friend was over and saw my kit's ,asking why I have so many . "why don't you build one and when it's finished just go and by another one " I tried to explain to him that most of my kits are oop and can no longer get , he failed to understand this . So I started thinking about this more and I'm wondering on why do we have so many kits hidden in our closets under our beds out in the shed . Then it hit me , I'm a builder and collector ! So far I have 90 in my stash
How many do you have in your stash ?

Counting the stash as anything unfinished, I've got
F-117, spit, 109d, 109e, i-16, lanc, tiger, mc-72, se5a, D-V, fw190,RFC crew
That's 12. and I feel a little naughty with a stash that size. 90 is very naughty.
Right that's it. I'm going to finish it all before I get something else.
F-117, spit, 109d are started, mc-72, tiger, and fw190 are for campaigns.
So that should halve it.

Terri, I feel your pain. Trying to explain why you have a "stash" to someone, even ones self, is difficult. I've been involved with the hobby for quite a while now and find that kits of particular subjects can appear and disappear from the market very rapidly. I've learned to get the one's I'm interested in while they are available. Before the internet was available (yes, it has not always been around) I would go "shopping" every week for subjects of interest at three or more shops, and yes I'd usually find something. As I did most of my shopping when kits were fairly cheap, I had about a $100 a week habit. I haven't done any serious "shopping" in a couple of years now, just bits and pieces.

In the past I've been known to buy a kit just for a particular feature, like a Me-163 with tractor and dolly. Have I too many ? Some would say yes. Do I have more than I will ever build ? Probably. But, I enjoy that fact that should I live long enough I have subjects of interest to me to build that are long OOP.

I have several hundred kits in my "stash" perhaps a thousand or so. I don't bother to count them anymore. I used to inventory them, but during the last inventory I realized I had more money invested in kits than I did in the last two houses I bought, so I quite inventorying them.

I don't consider myself to be a collector, as my intention has always been to build them all, but I have collected a lot of kits.

P.S. As all my kits are 1/72 storage of the unbuilt kits is not a major problem. The problem arises with built kits, I currently have space for about a hundred built models, but that is diminishing, as I switched to building Dioramas rather than just the models themselves.

I just may have to buy another house.....NOT!!!!!

I could tell you, but I cant get this keyboard to type in scientific notation... I

f I had a shrink, I am sure they would have something to say about my compulsive acquisition of kits, my attention span to any project, and my inability to finish said project..

but LOOK=======> and ad for a NEW Panther F!! right over there =============>gotta go buy one, maybe two since it is a 2-1 kit, better get a spare for when they go oop..
Lets completely ignore the complete ancient F kit already built on the shelf, the second one in progress ('In progress' being a euphamism for : tossed into a box and not looked at for 6+months)  with Aber etch, grills, Rubio barrel, karya cables, etc, PLUS the backup kit in the stash.
Lets also ignore the new Cyber Hobby F's, unstarted , in the stash as well while we are at it.

Having just moved, I can say I have more models than I could ever realistically build.I have more models in progress than most small-mid sized hobby shops have kits on the shelves. And having said that, I am going back to working on the Fine Molds Millenium Falcon, having just glued 20 parts on last night, the first time glueing anything in over a month.

Mike

who so far has NOT ordered the new Panther G with shrapnel covers OR the Panther F kit pictured on this page ===========> right over there!do want....

Hi all

Nice comments so far. Especially Mike put that right.

There was a thread on HS once where someone described his way home from the hobby shop, haveing the kit opened before reaching the car and playing with the parts during the ride home. Very funny and very true. Buying and fumbeling the parts is half of the fun. /thats why my collection is wrth nothing. I alway open the box and often cut a few parts and test fit them .. sometimes glue is involved

I have probably a few hundred ... I never counted and never wanted to. Finished must be around 80 now not counting quarterscale military and my destroyed 72 kits after changing to 48 in 1990ies

cheers

Great question Terri,
I have the same problem…I’m worried that I won’t find the kit later. I’ll buy two of the same kit…one to build and the other just in case I want to build it later or save it for whatever.

Am I a collector…yes. I like to collect U.S. military helicopters in 1/35th, 1/48th and some 72nd scale. Again I’ll buy two (2) each, one to build and the other to collect.

Funny thing my wife told…”when you die and if you were able to take the models with you…I doubt you’ll be able to buy glue and paint”

As for what kits i have, well here are some pics...

Wow. Finally I feel sane. I've got my Messerschmitts of course. Hobbycrafts old B, C and D together with a Avia S 199. Hasegawas E (the F is finished) and K. Academys G and Hispano 1112. Anybody see a method here? I might need to find a T and something to make a prototype by, but that can wait. And of course, there is another K in the stash that really has the urge to become a bubbletop, so far unknown, J-model from the "German carrier task force that participated in the Korea conflict".

Then I got two Smer Reggiane Falco, a Bristol Bulldog and three Hobbycraft Vampires of different sorts. Those together with unpurchased kits will form the swedish airforces line of fighters. On top of that I've got myself a P 47 for next year (may Nigels beard grow inwards) and I will get a FW 190 too for next years campaigns.

So I guess I'm a bit softcore compared to the lot here, huh

Hi Terri -

In direct answer, I have 136 airplanes in my stash as listed on my spreadsheet. I think I've got more than that cause I'm not real diligent about keeping my records up to date.

Is that enough?

Hi Robert , Three is not bad . Sometimes I wish I only had that many . Wouldn't be so stressed out on trying to find the time to build them all .
