Hi all

Yesterday I masked the canopy and sprayed it silver.

Now I am a bit unsure how to proceed. first i thought it would be best to paint first and glue later .. but knowing me, this will end in desaster. Luckily the top wing underside is the same as the topside colour. So I will move on, glueing the struts. I made a stopgap helling .. ugly, but it works I will also have to drill a few holes for the wires from the center struts and the steering wires. I started outboard:

Hi Steffen,.
Huuuh! This looks like a lot of work. I hope you won't break the struts while painting the model! Good luck!

Hi Jean-Luc

well, as per instructions the upper wing is olive all around and thus I planned to glue it on which would lessen the danger of breakage. But yesterday I got my reference booklet from home and the HT Model special states that the upper wing lower side is silver too .. makes things more difficult, but we will see.

At least I now can get back at the project as I can approx. find the spots where the inner inter plane struts wires go into the fuselage.

cheers

Hi All

I have drilled the holes for the inner wires that go into the fuselage. then added the wing2fuselage N-Struts and primed the thing. I think the black colour was a bit tooo hot and thus got this grey appearance .. it will get a new layer when I ironed out some imperfections ...

Hi gang

I played a little with this model again. After another black primer coat I sprayed the parts of the model that shold later appear "silver" with JPS Dark Aluminium .. it was not as shiny as in the first try on bare plastic, but it was probably painted anyway (and not NMF).. at least the wings undersides.

While I was masking those areas I thought that it would be best to spray the yellow parts of the lower wing now .. as I would have a small wrap around border of khaki that would be later difficult to mask .. and as I had the paint in the air gun I also sprayed the nose .. as this was not well planned thus I have to repaint the fuselage silver for the chipping which was quite hefty on this a/c. The fuselage band has to follow later as I had no silver undercoat and it nearly impossible to paint yellow on black.

Hi again

my ISP is playing tricks with me at the moment ... hope this gets through before the connection breaks down again. Today I airbushed alu again and then spread some dots Maskol across the metal areas and then khaki green over all

Hi All

Despite the Mossi quick build I try to finish this mode for the Air war Europe Campaign. My stroke really throw me back on this, but luckily all overdue got an extension.

I demasked the thing and masked again for the fuselage band. Hope I got the position and width half way right (just used Mk.I eyeball). Now it is demasked again and waiting for a clear coat for the decals and washes.

comments welcome

Hi Terri

First thanks for your wishes!

The chipping was done with Maskol over a metallic surface .. weathering is not yet done. I will do some washes and drybrushing and some rounds with Charisma colour silver and grey pencils...

cheers

Hi Steffen

Nice work on the weathering - this is going to be "S-13" right? If anyone thinks the chipping OTT, this was a really tatty bird - in fact, you could even add a little more at the wing root.

Hi Rowan

correct, it shall be finished in the markings of Cyprichs mount "S-13" (as far as that can be determined). thanks for the weathering hint. This are just the large flakes. I will add some more with the pencils and maybe using a small sponge here and there...

I glued on the upper wing this evening .. hope this will work out fine (fingers crossed). I wanted to keep this until the very last, but the broken strut convinced me to try to get better strength.

cheers

Hi again

This is what it looks like now .. I have added a first oils dry brushing (yellow and warm grey) which needs to be egalized a bit more on the lower wings .. though the gloss and flat coats even out a lot of the effects.

next is a gloss layer for the decals after I have painted and mounted the undercarriage. A problem that I had to accept when adding the top wing was the more complicated bracing attachment .. but I wanted to avoid breaking more struts.

cheers

Hi Terri

I am in rehab now and doing well. Sadly I could not finish the Avia before this. I posted in the Campaign thread, but here is the image again .. have to leave for the hospital ... mustn't miss meals.

Hi gang

time is running through my fingers .. I have to get this finished but as all too often i am loosing motivation. The upper wing broke off and I just could not get it back on ... finally -- after looong breaks to cool down --- I did and guess what .. it was skew-whiff .. slight force broke off one attachement point and straigtened the whole affair.

I then airbrushed a thick layer of Klear on and after it was dry I put on the larger decals (still some small pieces missing). I had very good results using Klear as setting solution for very small decals on my Hellcat so I used it for the large stuff here too (Klear solves the underlying layer and "melts it all together) .. it worked, but I am not totally happy about the process, so for the large stuff I will used Daco again in the future.

I am really worried about the bracing ... another motivation killer plus I am away two weeks for X-mas but still should have finished an article for our upcoming Mag by January ... aarrrrrgh .. I work best under pressure, but since my stroke I have to take medication which keeps it low

Here is a pic .... looks pretty advanced, but I fear I will take the project into the next year .... we'll see

Hi Steffen,

Wow, it seems your are busy for the next few days, or weeks, or months!? Still, I hope you will finish this one soon because it looks very nice. Good luck for the bracing. I know deadlines can take away the fun of modelling!

And if you can, take some well deserved rest during Weihnachten!

Many thanks Terri!

Well, I did not proceed .. just a wash is on and dries very slowly this time. The big question mark still is the bracing ... I cannot understand how you are building ww1 kits all the time

Sadly I cannot take the project home for X-mas so it will be put aside for that time (I plan to take my Tamiya Zero on tour though ) .. I am actually writing the article for my Hellcat build ... finally .. maybe I get it published by wednesday (on my website) ... I am updating that on a daily basis since I am out of hospital ... 74 articles so far. Good I did not have to write all of them myself. You see I was already pretty busy

O.k. gang

the pics posted by Miloslav in the othere thread reminded me to post some progress info (no photos and i am not sure there will be more). ..

this is rather outspoken so do not read further if you are easily upset by such stuff

This is one of the least pleasant builds i ever did .. that includes all Classic Airframes kits (some know how I like those). The model as such was very nice but the rigging is killing me. Eduard as specialist in etched parts should have included ready to go steel etched parts for this task. There conector bits are just a mean joke. I have done the 4 broad profiles and two of the thinner wires. It was a terrible work that you do not wish your worst enemy ... accordingly that damn model looks. I had another accident that would normally have led to the one and only flight of the model .. in the dust bin or against the next wall depending on which is farther away. But I have already promised an article for our mag so I must press on .. pix will have to be carefully taken ....

rant mode off

all the best

Hi Steffen,

Wow, it seems you are having a hard time with this kit. The best thing to do would have been to leave the model aside and work on it later but as you said, you must finish it for an article so it's impossible. It's funny (so to speak) that always when one works with deadlines, the build becomes a real nightmare...

I wish you will finally overcome this beast.

Many thanks Jean-Luc

The funny thing is I am building a Bf 110 E (eduard) as a calm down project along ... everything went smooth no glitches no worries .. just fun .. imagine that...

I should have done the Avia last year already (remember that Battle over Europe campaign). deadline was this weekend, I have no feedback yet if the editors try to find another article or if I should finish my build soon.

all the best

Steffen
