Wow , some one has been busy in front of the work bench !!!
Looking great Stephen !!! What did you use for the light blue ?
Greetings Terri,
I mixed white, dark sea blue and a touch of medium greem in ratios of 10 parts white, 3 parts blue, 1 part med. green. To shoot everything I used about 1.4 oz of paint.

From another website I was asked. . . .

Great stuff Stephen. Im sure with those huge windows in the side all the the work on the inside should be fairly visible.
I have a question. Were the scales on a printed fabric? Seems unlikely and more probably painted by the ground crew. If so it seems a little strange that the eyes and mouth are..err...a bit bland! Id have gone to town on the thing after the effort doing the scales.
. . .Guy
Greetings Guy;
Scales were not printed fabric. They were hand painted by crew. This scheme was from FFA 5b. The unit was evidently halved into "A" detachment and "B" detachment. Too early in the war for the Bavarian nomiclature. The early LFG Rolands came from the factory in the pale blue. Several of these had what we call the "shark's mouth". Since the Whale had no teeth some applications were bland. Although some especially at both frontline and training units had more teeth like a shark or pirhana.

I don't have kit 1116 so this is the first time viewing them . I like the shade better for some reason . The colour seems to have some life to it . however , I would really want those checker ones !!!! Do you have any info on that airframe Stephen ? ( Pretty please with whip cream on top !!! )
The light grey ones ? It's hard to see the scale detail on them . Could need glasses to you know .....................................

Now to the meat of this subject. To do the Fish Scale Scheme you have to backdate the parts to represent the early production types.

From Ken Galloway we have a similar build using the old Profi-pack kit #8041.

"Stephen,
I do not wish to hi-jack your very informative & enjoyable thread....(I wish you had posted this before I built mine) This is the earlier Profi-pack Roland C.II kit....No fish scale decals included....The machine I did is on page # 14 of WSDF 49 so these decals wouldn't have worked anyway! So I had to mask those little buggers!
NOTE: the aileron control cables cross (X) on the starboard side and are parallel on the port side, this is not shown in any scale drawing to date as far as I know???? I have seen many modelers miss this in their builds!
Keep up the Great Work & I can't wait for more installments!
Ken"

Well its almost finished.
The one surprise I had was working with the PE fretted gun jackets. Both fractured when I tried to rolled them into the needed cylinder shape. Since I have beau coup spares its not a too big a deal for me. But Buyer be warned. Very nice Stephen ! The scales really suit the aircraft . ( looks like a fish )
Thanks for the heads up on the jackets . When i do my build maybe I'll op for Tom's Modelworks or even Copper State Models for replacements .

I tested the main / large fret and it is brass covered in a silver nickel. The brass should be ok. More for me to ponder. Usually the silver nickel by itself is fine. You don't have to anneal it. (See the Fokker D.VII frets for silver nickel). Together there seems to be some kind of problem. Not sure yet.

I sent an e-mail to Eduard and the responded back promptly in a very positive manner.
Some self help tips to the modeler looking for help from a manufacturer. When you buy a kit and have a receipt for the purchase never be afraid to include it as a jpg attachment to your correspondence. proof of purchase goes further than "I have a problem. . ." This assures the manufacturer that you have indeed spent money on the kit. They respect that more than a demand. Respect folks, sometimes just simple respect goes further than anything.

Now that I am at this juncture I have a choice to make. The configuration of this Fish Scale Scheme from Eduard says that it is from the second production series C.999/16 - 1023/16. I am doing a bit more research to make sure.

Well here it is the finished build. I had to backdate the kit Spandau machine gun to match the 1915-16 version.
