I'll give it a shot: the first combat engagement of Americans in WW2 was that of the Flying Tigers in China flying P-40s against the Japanese.

Sorry, not what I'm looking for. While the Flying Tigers had pilots from the air corps, they weren't officially part of the army as they were a volunteer force.
