Hi Rowan
BTW just from today's Newsletter:

...

Schutzstaffeln & Schlachtstaffeln
Now that we have the prospect of injection-moulded, 48th scale kits of the two principle Halberstadt Cl types (from Mirage for the Cl. II and Karaya's first injection moulded plastic kit for the Cl. IV), it is high time that this neglected branch of the Luftstreitkrafte came in for the ' treatment'. These two machines will be covered (together with some others, including DFW CV's) in the first set. When we see provision of a new Hannover Cl.III kit (soon please), coverage will of course be extended.

...

so it might be good to wait a bit

cheers

Hi Steffen

That's exciting news. I'll won't be waiting long though - I'll crack on with the interior while the lozenge decals are in the post.

Don't worry, I haven't broken my resolution already and started extra builds - I've put off beginning the Macchi C.205 until the Latécoère 298 is finished.

All the best

Now , now Steffen . We should be giving him encouragement to finish the project which he started , which one however, is another whole can of worms

Hi there

Just to keep Terri happy (and to confound Steffen) I started painting the lozenge fabric in the cockpit. I'm just going by the sample shots of Microsculpt's decals - I'm sure that'll be fine by the time it's all weathered a bit and closed in.

Talking of lozenges - but not really knowing the lingo! - when Mirage say in the painting instructions to use "5-tone lozenge, daylight pattern , pale hues" as here:

does that correlate with what I'd normally call the "underside" lozenges? (I've ordered the whole set from Microsculpt, so I'm well covered! )

All the best

Yup , you are well covered . Microsculpt 5 colour upper and lower are prefect . You will have to cut your own rib tapping thought . The colours are a very close match to Mirages profiles in their instruction sheet which are a little off in hues , but very close

Did you get the texturing ones as well ?

Hi Terri

No, I didn't get the texture decal - it's an interesting idea, but the effect looks too strong to my eyes for 1:48. I thought about all the fabric-covered planes I cleaned at RAF Hendon and how you couldn't see the weave of the cloth until you got very close, so I gave it a miss.

All the best

Greetings Rowan,

The texturing is supposed to represent shadowing found on printed fabric surfaces. Also please remember the BEF fabrics were about 96 -100 count weaves in a square inch. Where German were 47-53 count threads per square inch (and calendered). So the thread count on original BEF machines was more dense.

Calendering was done on German aircraft grade fabrics by running the completed roll of fabric through a set of steam heated rollers. This sqashed the thread cross-section to an oval shape.

Hi Stephen

Thanks for the extra info. I was put off by the example on MicroSculpt's site, which looks overscale to me compared with pics I've seen of preserved lozenge fabric samples. As I say, I like the idea - and it's purely a subjective thing - but I think I'll stick to pastels as a simple, safe, way to give a little varation to fabric surfaces.

All the best

Hi again

I got an e-mail today confirming that my MicroSculpt lozenge decals are on the way to Blighty! I'm really excited to see what they're like.

Meanwhile, I've been making reasonable progress with my evil WW2 build, so I should be in good shape to get back to the Halberstadt when they arrive.

All the best

Hi Terri

My Laté 298 should be finished this week, so I'll be able to get on with the Halberstadt again.

Hi all

I've decided to start work on my Luft '46 Campaign build just to teach you a lesson for nagging!

The Halberstadt will have to wait until I've fulfilled my Campaign commitments - plus, there are some rather stunning samples coming in that will take priority over all the fun builds.

All the best
