I don't know if anyone else has figured this out, and I did purely by coincidence ( I like to drink a beer or two while building ) but a pint glass makes an awesome stand for hands free work!!!

Tried your pint glass trick Ray, and a funny thing happened. The wing of my Mustang is full of beer

I'm enjoying this thread a lot. Your enjoyment at getting back to the hobby is exactly what I went through a few months back, and it's infectious. Your 'stang looks really nice, great effort !!

Cheers, D

thanks guys! I'm really stoked about building another mustang soon! They just look so cool! any advice on the best kit to get?

I've got a stuka in the works right now, and then I want to try my hand at a B-17 for the nose art campaign, but I think I might want to try a mustang kit that's a little more challenging, maybe even a bigger scale... not sure yet...

Very nice so far

Neet trick with the glass except my would be for Rum and Pepsi

For 48 scale the Tamiya P-51 D and B are super kits and highly reconmmended . Excellent fit and not bad detail either . I have build a few of these , but I haven't build other manufactures other then the Monogram . the Hasegawa kit is also a great kit from what I haave read on the net . So either one you can't go wrong . The other guy's will have their opinions with some great advice .

Well... here she is!!! what a ride! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Although I did discover a few things I didn't know about building aircraft I'm not discouraged from doing more.

I may have weathered a bit heavy, but as an old tanker, I sometimes forget the level of maintanence on planes, so we'll just say the crew chief was sick this week!

I hope you guys like what you see, thanks for the tips and cheering!

Oh, here's a picture of the actual plane. Found it doing research... I guess to be perfect, I still need to find some of those mirrors...

and one other quick question for future reference... I'm kinda confused about the star decals... there's 2 different sizes, and I put the larger ones on the fuselage and the smaller on the wings... but I've seen other builds that are the other way around... which way's correct???

Thanks!!!

Ray, looks good. I hope I do nearly as well with my Testors P-51D.

I have an Arii / Otaki? 1/48 P-51D that my son started 10-12 years ago. I'm trying to de-construct it and start over. It's got lots of detail, shape looks OK. Hopefully I can make something decent out of it.

I built Academy's P-51B in 1/72 a few years back. It was a very nice build, I'd recommend it to anyone. Then again, I'm not much of a rivet counter so the shape could be all wrong.

Hi Ray, Well to begin with, yes, large star and bar on wings smaller on fuselage, but since its your first, I wouldnt sweat it much. Other than that, you did a really great job on the plane. It shows just how much you pay attention to the detail (take care of the little things and the big ones sort themselves out )

Weathering tip, depending on the age of the plane, the amout of combat it had seen, the weather and ambition of the ground crew, these things could look from factory fresh to ready for the junk pile.

This is a picture of Typhoon Magoon a 4th FG B that was given to 357th FG when they where short of planes in January 1945

And I didnt do half the justice to the photo I was working from

It's all in the eye of the builder
