I was looking through the book, UNITED STATES NAVY AND MARINE CORPS FIGHTERS 1918-1962 by Matt, Robertson, Hepworth, Carrick and Yeoman, Produced by Russell. A Harleyford Publication.

On page 22 there is a photo of a Nieuport 28 with a caption that says :
"In July 1920 the mainstay of the Navy Fighters were the twelve Nieuport 28's that were acquired in mid 1919. Some, such as the example shown, were later used as racers."

The picture shows a standard Nieuport 28 painted in what is my guess a black fuselage with gold wings, tailplanes and control surfaces. There is a large 8 on the fuselage in white. There are no national markings to be seen. I choose these colors because that is the known paint scheme used by the US Navy Air Racers during the 1920's and the black and white photo seem to support this surmise.

Interesting , black and gold . I didn't think the Navy did air racing . Who would they have raced against ?

Terri and all,
I fear I must retract my guess as to the colors of the Navy racer. I have discovered an error in my memory. The black and gold were the US Army colors. I will do some more research into the Navy colors.

Mike the falable.

Blue and Gold are traditionally Navy Colors. My guess is that it would be Blue and Gold, similar to the Blue Angel paint scheme. Just a guess.

Best
