Fred, that is a good idea. The kit that I had planned (La 7) broke the prop and have been looking in my stash also for a suitable replacement.

You sure about that?

I just got my kit in the mail today (whoa boy.)

The good news: its a total opportunity to hone hobby skills.

This Macchi is a _total_ garage kit. 2 vacuform sheets and a bag of white metal parts. (That's pretty much it)

No wheel wells, no cockpit, no decals. Nothing. I do, however, have a plan. Deep deep in the darkest recesses of my stash closet I have a Tauro MC.202 kit. The kit has lots of detail but the mold quality is so poor that, when presented with some Hasegawa kits, I just chucked it into the vault.

Now I can use bits like wheel wells and landing gear covers to flesh out this vac kit.

It... just... might... work!!

(cue thunderclap and flash of lightning)

Cheers,
Fred

I can assure you that , yes it does hurt very much !

Thats about what you get with vac kit's and are perfect for getting caught up on some skills . Cool idea of the use of the other kit for parts .

Wow, some great stuff there Dave. A 1/48 Forger is very tempting, but a 1/48 Atlas rocket with the Mercury capsule is very, very tempting.
Thanks for posting.

I decided to practice up a little, since it has been a few years that I attempted to build a VAC kit.

Here is an old kit by THE EAGLES TALON, INC.
LAVOCHKIN LA-7 it looks easy enough to do a little cutting and SANDING on to get myself in some sort of ability to accomplish the build for the campaign (MPM AVIA Av.135)

the resin is not bad, but I will have to make a prop blade after the carpet monster ate one that broke off in the bag

After using a pencil to outline the parts for the sanding process I cut them out

Made fuselage formers from surplus stock from the kit using a circle timplate, the first peices sanded were the fuselage and they were warped
Photobucket

the wing tops will not be too bad to sand but the bottom has a dihedral and will give me some trouble.

I can't believe I'm signing up for this one. I have trouble finishing injection kits and have never built a vac in my life. Naturally, it didn't stop me from BUYING them. My entry will definitely be a Rareplanes 1/72 kit. I am leaning towards the deHavilland Venom FB.5.

I might try cobbling up a ribbon. Most likely it will feature a Mattel Vac-U-Form.

Gary, if you are able to make a ribbon ( I cannot make ribbons ) then a vac kit is easy.

Forgot that I gave my Vac-U-Form away a few months ago. I suppose I could find pictures online but then I thought "How many people would be familiar with it?". So I tried something else. Can't say I'm happy with it but it's an idea.

Gary, I like the ribbon and it would be nice if you produced a book in tutorial form on how to make ribbons I would buy it. As for the kit I have a few and I would be able to send you one just to keep you in the campaign.

Ah, my point is proved. I have many vacuform kits here to choose from. I was talking about the Mattel Vac-U-Form "toy" that used to be sold in the US in the 60s(?).

Gary, I remember that toy and had the chance to obtain one before I went into the Navy but thought that it would get misplaced. I could kick myself now for not getting it.
