Hi all
I started the Academy Bf109E-3 "Heinz Bär" kit as a "quick" build for the Bf 109 campaign. I got the kit, because I just wanted to try the camo-decals, but I will not do Heinz Bär but Gerhard Schöpfel. The personal markings will come from an old Techmod sheet ...
here is the pit so far:
I left off the stick and seat (as I need to do some adjustment behind it) and glued the fuselage together ... now I know where the Trumpy 32 scale kit got the strange shape from .. but it does not look as bad in 48 scale...
we'll see how this project goes .. I was a bit reluctant to make it a BLog as the progress steps will not be very close together...
all the best
Steffen

Hi Steffen.
I'm following this one in particular.
I'm interested in what you think of the kit as I'm considering purchasing it.

Hi Chris
Well, I would not buy it for it's finesse or accuracy but it is a nice kit if you just want to have a Bf 109 E in the cabinet.
I personally would always prefer the Tamiya kit which is better in almost every aspect (maybe the price might be something that makes a difference foy you, but the Tamiya kit can also be very cheap nowadays). The Hasegawa is better in some aspects but lacking in other...

Hi Steffen,
I'd be buying purely on price.
The Academy kit and kits in general are about 2/3 the price of the Tamiya ones.
I can purchase the Academy one for about $30 and the Tamiya one is around the $45-$50 mark.
Kits aren't cheap here in NZ
Cheers

Some more progress.
in this picture you see to of the annoying shortcommings of the kit. The rear fuselage is much too angular .. just like teh new Trumpy 32 kit (Tamiya and Hasegawa are o.k IMO). there is nothing I can do without major surgery in this area so I just leave it as it is. The nose cooler has no outlet so I will add that, no big deal but a bit of work. The inlet is also not very goo detailed so I might add the "splitter/shutter" plate at least
Fit is o.k. i just want a good alignment for minimum use of filler thus I used the clamps..

Hi Steffen
Nice one! It's good to see the old Hobbycraft kit given an outing in its new guise. Your notes on faults and corrections are very helpful. Are you going to change the slats? - if I remember rightly they were scribed too deep.
I'll be fascinated to see if the camo decals work at all well...

Hi Rowan
no, I do not want to make a fuss with this kit. It is just a test for the decals. In the end it will look like a Bf 109E, no matter what I do or don't. I just could not stand the missing flap/exit on the cooler ...
Thanks for watching!
BTW someone already built it oob for the Bf 109 campaign (see campaign thread)

Hi Steffen
I'm afraid I'm out of touch with that thread so I missed it. I need to get back to my 'G-10 and start "Campaigning" again. (I've got the SBS Model cockpit basically done and Eagle Editions are sending some nice decals, so I'll be underway again soon.)

So this went a bit of the raod as it is now officially no longer OOB ....
I do not want to build the markings from the kit and was looking for something different. I decided on Gerhard Schöpfels "yellow 1" from 9./JG26. Sadly I found out that I have to change it to a later style canopy. So I took out a spare Hasegawa canopy and made it work with the kit ... the rear part is from teh kits clear part, as the Hasegawa was much too arrow here (the kit part is also too narrow) so after some reworking this it how it looks now ...
I am not too happy with it, but I must proceed as this is just a side project and nothing I wanted to take really serious

yes I will do but as I build "pilots" for most of my builds I do not want doubles ... and I already have Heinz Bär
I will replace that old build as this was my first 48 scale model in the early 90ies. The new will be a Bf109G-2 with the jumping lion emblem (he was from Saxony and this shows this very well) ... so it had to be something different, but with the 02/71 camo and no yellow nose ... Schöpfels Staffelführer machine fits the bill nicely ...

O.k after some tedious work (masking canopies ... yawn) and some layers of paint (Gunze) I started with the decals today. I tested on side large decal first and the other with th esmall decals applied first ... both ways have advantages, but no trimming when you apply the small bits first. looks quite good so far. I used Daco orange, just to be sure. For the front I will use Daco red as I doubt it will conform easily.

Ahh the joy of research
Thus I need to adjust the camo a bit. All in all the decal thing worked well. Of course the nose and daco red were a bit tricky, thus I had a small piece folding over. I do not like the RLM 02 of the decals. In my book it needs to be a warmer tone (less blue more red so to say). Sadly I need to touch up the 02 on the nose as my bird has a slightly different position on the aircraft ...

so far so good
some more decals to add. I am using the kit decals (great stuff, minimal carrier film ... Cartograf) and some for the markings from an early Techmod sheet (must be one of the first AM decals I bought in the mid 1990s) The yellow triangle is painted as on the real thing

Hi again
today I put the flat on. I used Xtracrylix as my Gunze stock is down to one bottle. I still do not like the finish, but what the heck. I still need to attach a lot of small parts and add some finishing touches...

Lots of small parts added, head armour and stick in the cockpit, wires ... still 2 parts to add

Hi Steffen,
Loks good! I can't wait to see it in real. I'm curious to see how the camouflage decals look like on the model.
Is this a game? Is there something to win?
My answer is: wing gun barrels.

Hello Jean-Luc
I also like "Loks", but I prefer "Flugzeuge" ....
Nothing to win and you are right about the guns.
