Didn't someone recently issue a 1/72 Pfalz in the movie markings?

That would be Encore Models a couple of years ago.

Yes! That's the one I remember seeing. I knew it was a bagged kit just couldn't remember the manufacturer. Wonder if there's still any about?

The Squadron Shop shows it in stock, so presumably it's still available, given that they're also the distributor.

Great post, Stephen!

I've watched the movie (VHS) about a dozen times in the past year!

So Hptm. Heidemann is killed in July? I never read the book. I translate

Hptm. Otto Heidemann Aug17 Jul18 KIC

as Heidemann was in the unit from August 1917 until July 1918, when he was Killed In Crash.

In the book he is KIlled instead of Stachel. The film ending wanted a moral high ground and killled Stachel instead.

Derek Piggot did a lot of the stunt flying, including the under the bridge flight and crashing.

He is more well known in gliding scene and has been in Australia a few times over the years for competitions and other instructional type events. Derek came to know my father (common interest in gliding instruction and competitions, they often flew against each other so to speak) and he often spoke of his adventures in doing this movie. He was not real impressed with the imagination of the movie folks who seemed to think there was no limit to what you could do in an aeroplane and survive.

Some of the conversations are coming back to me, it was a while ago.

One of the prangs involved putting a series of saw cuts through the landing gear leaving just enough meat to take off. The landing gear then obligingly sheared off in the prang as planned. I think only 1 camera got the prang and the director wanted it repeated to have more camera angles. The repeat did not happen.

The under bridge flight was achieved by Derek setting up 2 poles on the far side of the bridge (one behind the other) to line up upon so he could fly a very accurate straight line under the bridge and not strike the sides.
