I think for the next set I'll do the Eduard 1:48 Alb. D.III (German), D.V & Va fuselages. But HGW has the mid colour for the D.V / Va fuselages. I may want something more blonde like Mr. Miller's skin on MvR's D.V.

While I have the time I wanted to use some of the HGW sheets on an Eduard 1:48 Alb.D.III and a D.Va fuselage.

I like the wood grain decals. I am not confident with my wood grain techniques at this stage to try and do an entire fuselage, so the decals are a nice alternative. I like the different effects the modeler can achieve by mixing, sheets, subtle shading and the direction of the grain. Very nice and convincing.

You all will remember this post. Well I have started separating the two sheets by soaking them in airbrush thinner and gently pushing them apart.



Below shows the paper with the gum removed by soaking the wood in the thinner.

My build of 8349/17 from Eduard's new mold #8256. The national & personal markings are from Eduard's first issue #8001 (back in 1994). The lozenge is the fine set from Aviattic. The wood grain for the fuselage is a decal set from HGW. I deleted the "new" Eduard engine for an OOP resin item.

Concerning propellers, overcoating and laminations. Here is a bit of fun. Remember that for single or dual seat propellers they usually had 5-6 laminations. The laminations tend to wrap around the leading edges of the prop blade or paddle and travel in parallel to each other to the prop hub. The Allies & Central powers used two methods for overcoating. 1. Translucent / clear (or tinted) varnish or 2. Opaque shellac. British and French used the second method on most of their aircraft in a red brown color. Oh, and if anybody snivels about you knowing the way laminations fall on a wood propeller and call you a "rivet counter", wear it with pride. They are just too lazy to do it right.

Maybe HGW rivet and nail decals might be worth trying with a natural wood fuselage?

Has anybody tried thin ceder(?)wood sheets used in aluminium cigar tubes? They are really thin, and after quick soak in warm water can be straightened. I used to be a cigar smoker, and smoked several WNW-OOPs through my lungs, at least I saved most of the containers, after seeing that not only a good cigar, it had also other interesting stuff inside.
These are from "the Good Stuff", mostly Cubans, but also from other Caribbeans have these, although not cheap either. So check your friends who smoke cigars, local gentlemen´s club, tobacco store etc.
I had planned to try to use these long time ago, but when I saw this thread, I thought let´s go! Here is a series of images what to expect. First batch is drying under weight and between plastic sheet and tissue paper.

Give it a try if you find these for free, but don´t start smoking, better buy something healthier.

Several hundred euros I could have spent a bit wiser..

I measured one straight from the tube, it has 0,29mm thickness. I think it can be carefully thinned with fine sandpaper.
Also noted that after soaking they come very pliable, maybe able force them to conform of the aircraft hull with rubber band or string?
