Wreckage of the B-29 “Kee Bird” (USAF s/n 45-21768) lies on this lake near Peterman Fjord in Greenland. The aircraft, part of the 46th/72nd Reconnaissance Squadron ran low on fuel and made a forced landing on this frozen lake on February 21, 1947.
In the mid-1990s an attempt to recover the aircraft was made with the idea of showing it on the warbird circuit in the United States. The aircraft had made a successful (albeit bumpy) landing on the frozen lake and had remained relatively intact at the site ever since. The USAF had also surrendered any claim to the B-29. It was believed that the ship could be put into flying condition, flown off the frozen lake and ferried to Thule AFB where further repairs could be made before flying back to the US. Over the course of three years several expeditions were made to the site to replace various components of the aircraft including engines and propellors. A crude runway was carved out of the ice via a bulldozer that had been ferried into the site via a DHC-5 Caribou. After many and great difficulties repairs were completed by early 1995. The aircraft was successfully started, however as it began to taxi into position for the takeoff attempt a fire broke out in the rear fuselage. The crew all escaped injury but the B-29 was destroyed, with the tail section breaking loose from the forward fuselage. The heat from the flames were so intense that the lake thawed out somewhat, leaving the aircraft partially submerged where it remains to this day.

http://www.panoramio.com/user/4333239edit to add: the unloading of the bulldozer from the Caribou would also make an interesting diorama.

That sounds familiar. Was there a TV documentary made about it? Real shame they weren't successful. It would have been great to have another B-29 flying. How does that saying about the best laid plans of mice and men go?
That whole story would make a great diorama, but who would have the space?

just a question of scale. in 1:144, for which
decals are available,
24x36 would be plenty.
in 1:400, or 1:500 12x24 would sufficient, though locating or scratch-building the models might be challenging.

Can I ask that the rules be adjusted to allow down to 1:500 scale, Ive just gotten interested in the smaller scales.

Yeah now I remember that.
It still seems a shame to leave it out there for looting or souvineer hunters. Logistically it would be difficult, but as Indiana Jones would say 'It belongs in a museum'. A case in point being that P-40 recently found in Egypt, its already being stripped of anything of value.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/aviation/9256879/WWII-fighter-plane-hailed-the-aviation-equivalent-of-Tutankhamuns-Tomb-found-preserved-in-the-Sahara.htmlEven this would make a cracking diorama subject, but I think I'll leave it to the more adventurous among us.

Hi guys I have recently been considering building a diorama based on the Ace Combat 6 console game, and this Campaign seems like a good way to go for it! Problem being I haven't built one before. The original plan was to build the A-10 Warthog in the game hangar with the players 'selected weapons' laid out in front of it. However after consideration I decided to downsize from 1/48 to 1/72 and change it to a ground attack diorama; with the A-10 attacking ground targets, such as vehicles and maybe an installation of some kind. I suppose the hangar would be a better choice for the campaign? (Problem being that I have managed to buy a couple of vehicles for the dio already, an M113 and a Bedford 3 ton truck.) Any ideas? Or should I leave it out for this round?

hi,
go for it, you have a whole year and we dont start till january so that gives you time to collect and plan everything.

Thanks Paul, The way I see it, if it is just the plane i might as well go the hog and do it 1/48! I will see what I can do. I will probably go for the hangar, I will have to find something else to do with the vehicles!

Guys
What really draws me to enlist for this campaign is the awesome ideas that you guys have....very impressive. I have a few Academy and Dragon 1/35 helicopter kits which I plan to build next year (will decide on the setting nearer the time), and the timeframe of 1 year is perfect. Just can't wait till 2013
Regards
I've got my MOJO working......or maybe not

Signed up, but have no idea what to make yet. However, the stash is full, so there will be plenty of opportunities.

Either is acceptable, but you should note that construction shouldn't start until the campaign begins. In the meantime you can be planning and gathering your materials.

My ad! I forgot this starts in the New year, I haven't started it yet, just been looking in the box and things. Its the Italeri A-10 and it looks like a great kit. Anyone know an easy way to create their own decal sheets? I have a sheet of the paper lying around somewhere, but I don't really know how to go about getting it done!

There is also (from memory) a B-17 being used as a petrol station cover/roof over there. I have forgotten where it was/is but I remember reading an article on it somewhere.
