"Sikorsky planned the S-38 to be an "Explorer's Air Yacht". 101 were produced beginning in 1928. The S-38 was the first mass produced amphibious aircraft. They were used as small airliners, military liaison aircraft and luxury transports. By far the most famous S-38 was Osa's Ark, used by filmmakers Osa and Martin Johnson to support an epic two year journey through Africa."
