Hi Ladies and Gents

This is going to be my build log for my entry for KotS III. The Eduard 1/48 Pfalz D.IIIa. This time I will try rigging in a serious way - not just stretched sprue as I have previously done.

More to follow when the campaign starts

Interesting. Make sure to share any pitfalls in the kit.

My plan is to use the loop method - if that is the correct name. Installing small brass loops for all rigging and then using brass tread to do the actual rigging. I might also use stretched q-tips if I cam make it work, but might be a little optimistic for my first real try at rigging.

My fall back method is simply drilling holes in the bottom wings and then fill the hole with super glue and sand it flat after drying.

Hi Jesper! Which part of the world are you now?

Knowing you, I wouldn't have any doubts about your skills with turnbuckles & stretched Q-tip method. I could only recommend you getting E-Z-Line for the rigging in certain areas: fishing line (as a rigging material) would make the wings structure more rigid. The only problem you might face is aligning the wings without the biplane assembly jig, but I'm 100% certain you know this and will find the way to deal with it.

Cheers from windy Riga!

Hi Jesper ,

Have a peek in my profile , did a build review with Mark on the dual combo kit .

Over all , it's a great kit ! When attaching the lower wing to the fuselage really make sure you have a excellent fit . This will save some time on the amount of putty and sanding in the wing root . What works really well is fill the seem with putty ( I use Squadron green ) then use a q-tip dipped in lacquer thinner and run this over the putty removing the excess . If you are light on the putty the less sanding will be need . Once the putty has dried prime the area , it will show on where your touch up are needed . One the ones I have built the tailplane is either a perfect fit or it needs a bit of sanding so test fit this area as well .

The cab struts and inter struts need their location holes re-drilled at a angle on the fuselage or you could bend the attachments points on the struts them self very carefully to the angle needed . Other then that no other issue's with how she goes together .

Also check out Stephen's build review and reviews on the Eduard kit , very informative . There are many builds in the archives which will be a aid as well .

If you are going with the wire hoops you might want to try out Bob's Buckles . You can order them with selves of brass tubing as well if you aren't comfortable with the q-tip .

Hi Arseny. Good to hear from you. Currently in Las Vegas with work. Although I live in Atlanta with the family.
I might need to steal some Lego from the kids to build a rig for the wings.

Terri, thanks for the tips and tricks on the kit. I will check out the reviews. Do you have a link to bob buckles?

Great to hear you are not in Denmark, Jesper! Judging from "Forbrydelsen" terrible things happen in Copenhagen.

Look forward to see more of your Pfalz!

Here's an alternative to Bob's buckles - our local (Latvian) aftermarket supplier makes rigging loops. I haven't tried them yet (most of the times I make my own loops from wire).
