I'd be able to do an Airfix Tiffie, as I already have a couple lined up, anything else and I'd have to pass as I have too little time.

I think I'd agree with one of Airfix's new 1/72 kits would be a great choice. Cheap, easy to get, quick to build and great showcase to show just how good some of these are. Other alternatives to the Typhoon would be the P-51D (just look at whats available for those in aftermarket decals!), the P-40, Zero and the Gnat.

if we're going to build 1/72 i think that maybee their new vampire t.11 would be a good one too as there are plenty of aftermarket decals coming and it have been operated by diffrent countries.

I'd go for the Airfix T-11 as one of the boxing's has decals for an RNZAF T-11 (right in my back yard so to speak!) and the fact that there were a lot of exports for these aircraft.


I'd also like to make the point that Airfix is deserving of our support as they have in the last couple of weeks made sure that my large scale Stuka for the Airfix II campaign is ready to participate they have sent out the clear sprue AND the rubber tyres after two separate requests no questions asked no proof of purchase no dealers or model shops to deal with just a simple email is all it takes. I say again WELL DONE AIRFIX! So if we agree on manufacturer then I guess it's a haggle over which kit?

As an after thought were there many Seafire FR46/47 operators? As I see they've re-released this kit again.

I would agree on vampire as well, it offers more diversity than typhoon. What other newer tool options do we have in 72 from 'fix?

Airfix has done quite a few new tool kits this year. In addition to the Tiffie and the Vampire there's a Gladiator, Hurricane, FW-190A-8, Harrier Gr.1, Lightning F.3, Lancaster B.III(special) {dambusters} and Lancaster B.II. Not all of these have been released yet, and even the ones which have been released are not universally available yet.

In 2012 the Mustang, Folland Gnat, Bf-109E, Spitfire F.22, A4 Skyhawk, and Swordfish were new tool kits. These ones are a little more widely available.

Well as far as decals go i know of a couple that is on the way. One you can see here: Printscale

Extradecals is also working on 3 diffrent sheets being: 1 2 3

The Vamp that Airfix made is designated the T.11 which was the designation in the RAF. When exported it was called T.55. The decal options give you the possibility to build the vamp used by:
Great Britain, Australia, India, Jordan, South Africa, Ireland, Chile, Sweden , Austria, New Zeeland, Switzerland, Rhodesia and Lebanon.

Also Norway, Finland, Indonesia, Japan (one for eval), Portugal, Burma, Syria, Venezuela, Katanga, Egypt and Iraq used them so as you can see they got around and there are lots of markings to chose from.

could we persuade airfix ? (if that's whose model we're going to use) to supply us with enough kits for the group build ?

I like the idea of using the Airfix vamp as the kit of choice. The more I learn about this classic aircraft the more I like. There is a great youtube in-cockpit video of one of these classic plans from take off to landing. Watching this South African perform is downright nostalgic. Richard, I'm in on this campaign. I don't know who's air-force it will end up decorated for but the T.11 has certainly captured my imagination.

But boss, there is no propeller! However will I know which end to put the driver in?
Oh well, I suppose I will have a try. At least I can try to find some RAAF markings to throw at it!
