The build proceeds with lozenge rib tapes coming next and the dark fuselage plywood simulation. The PE cockpit tub is getting its wood simulation and its fittings being detailed. Remember that PE was never meant to stand alone. Its only the bare bones of the build. You have to add the meat and texture.

Thanks Terri,
It is proceeding slowly so I can finish up my KotS III build. And now I come to making a choice as to either add real wood skinning or go with a dark simulated decal version. Either way a round of fuselage panel pattern making will be in my future. Also since I used the Wood & Wire lozenge decals I may need a bit more for lozenge rib tapes. See how the HGW rib tapes stand out under the transparent Wood & Wire lozenge.

Hi Stephen ,
Yes I did note the effect of the stitching under the lozenge . Was going to comment but I'm waiting for the end results once the rib tapes are in place . Over all the effect so far is pleasing .
Really will depend on how transparent it will still be . The black stitching really stands out now and with rib tapes the black might stand out just the same . I like it though and not something we really see others doing . Will keep this in mind but perhaps a toning down the black will yield a neat effect .
I would go with the wood decals - will co-inside so well with what you have done already . There are a lot of curves to the fuselage , showing folks how would go a long way .

You all will remember the wood grain decal and application thread 101? Well I have started separating the two sheets by soaking them in airbrush thinner and gently pushing them apart.
Below shows the paper with the gum removed by soaking the wood in the thinner.

It's interesting that you've done the wing lozenge before painting the fuselage. Masking would seem to have been made quite difficult unless you're planning on using wood grain decals for the whole fuselage.

My two options were using decals or the wood veneer. I was resisting painting wood grain on this one and truth be told I am probably going with the decal wood grain for this build.

Ok folks almost back to normal. (I have had computer problems) I have settled on completing the outer wood surface with the HGW wood decals.

Here is the result of HGW rib tapes under Wood & Wires 5 colour lozenge and rib tapes cut from the same type of decals.

There are two methods for fixing this area. You can add the skin to the outer face and that builds up the area or you can add the shim to the lower edges that mate the to the fuselage with one piece of .020 thou. This section spans across the under side creating a "shelf".

Nice work, a while back I built a Nieuport 17 which in retrospect has been my most satisfying build.Your work here inspires me to return to WW1 aircraft. They are so majestic, somewhat obscure aircraft yet intriguing.
