Alittle further down the road. Eduard 1.48 kit #8001, SSW D.III as D.3025/18. One last note is that I added the Eduard PE child's soldier doll from the new kit #8256 that is appropriate to this profile.

My build of 8349/17 from Eduard's new mold #8256. The national & personal markings are from Eduard's first issue #8001 (back in 1994). The lozenge is the fine set from Aviattic. The wood grain for the fuselage is a decal set from HGW. I deleted the "new" Eduard engine for an OOP resin item.

I used the Aviattic faded and factory fresh versions on different portions of the wings to note original applications and replacement components.

Hi Stephen

As Terri says - Nice job!

The low angle side view does reinforce my view that the rib detail in the kit is heavy-handed - just as well, because I've already knocked it well back on the sample that I will tackle one day (I promise I will make time, somehow...).

Another point I notice that we should pick up on for our review coverage is the upper wing crosses. Have Eduard made the decals too large? - because they seem to be overlapping slightly onto the underside.

All the best

Though I disagree with your point of view, I am sure we will all be impressed by your attempt and interpretation of the wing details. The crosses I used were fine and especially on the ailerons and their cut outs tend to wrap slightly. Some good references might help with your future questions.

Cheers Stephen

It's the leading and trailing edges that I was referring to. I guess they slipped slightly during application, but you can probably still do a careful clean-up with a scalpel and very fine wet & dry. A bit tougher if you've sealed them with a top coat, but still do-able.

Thanks for your confidence in how my build will turn out - much appreciated. I'll certainly do my best, but it'll be a while before I can tackle it - as you can see, the AEG will keep me busy for some time, plus there's a bunch of other exciting stuff looming on the horizon.

All the best

No, they did not slip. And the trailing edges "are the ailerons" and do wrap slightly on all four. There is no wrap on the top wing leading edges. Its only on the lower wing leading edge of the model and can be found on real airframes. Maybe a photo might help you?

I don't think the photo actually shows what I meant, so we could be talking at cross-purposes. No worries.

One final note from me on the old mold build #8001. She took a 1st place at the IPMS Region X convention June 12 & 13, 2015.

Since some of the image links are broken here is a repeat of the first of my builds of Eduard's new mold #8256. The national & personal markings are from Eduard's first issue #8001 (back in 1994). The lozenge is the fine set from Aviattic. The wood grain for the fuselage is a decal set from HGW. I deleted the "new" Eduard engine for an OOP resin item.

Eduard's 1/48 scale kit #8256 is their 100th kit issue. While being a "HiTech" and finely detailed plastic mold it has garnered some harsh critisicm concerning their on-going struggle to get the colors and layout right on their German Lozenge camouflage. Since 1992 Eduard has made various attempts and has come close once. For some reason after that they veered away sharply. I will be using aftemarket decals to finish this kit. 1. Because I purchased it with my own money.

Eduard’s own Vladimir Sulc has commented, ". . . The SSW D.III was outsourced (to another company) and unfortunately it shows, and so we will be doing the SE 5a ourselves. . ." While the kit has a high degree of detail, I will try to give you a head’s up on what you may want to fix.

This is my build of 8349/17 from Eduard's 1/48 new mold #8256. The national & personal markings are from Eduard's first issue #8001 (back in 1993). The lozenge is the fine set from Aviattic. The wood grain for the fuselage is a decal set from HGW. I deleted the "new" Eduard engine for an OOP resin item. 8349/17 was from Kest 4b and was turned over to the French at the EOW. It was one of the early production machines sent to JG II and returned for refitting. It was then assigned to Kest 4b a home defence unit. After the war's end it was photographed in French hands.

I began the other two Eduard 1/48 SSW D.III builds that I marked as Marine Feld Jasta aircraft that may have been among the machines turned in at Nivelles at the EOW.

Thank you Bernd. Well ya'll here is the result of a dual Eduard 1/48 SSW D.III (kit # 8256) build. I used the HGW dark wood decal panels (modified) and a mix pf the Aviattic 1/48 factory fresh and faded 5 color lozenge. The motors are the Eduard resin item and the Instrument gauges are all Eduard aftermarket PE.

The build represents a machine from Marine Feld Jasta IV at the End of War. Possibly D.3042/18.

Like the wrap on the struts, all the cutting and sanding make me want to brake out my 2 Battle Axe kits, need to finish my Spads first.

Hi Stephen

Nice jobs! I really like the way the lozenge bleeds through the over-painting on the tail realistically.

At this rate your name will become as synonymous with building the SSW D.III as Mal's has with Spitfires!

All the best
