That is until you get into the build and see this and that, that needs your attention. Before you know it, it's a super detailed one of a kind, masterpiece. 6 months for sure, and with the P-61, it's going to be harder and harder to stay focused. Believe, I know.

Well unfortunatly while checking the fit on the intakes I discovered a real bugger of a problem. I thought I had sanded the aires cockpit down enough (paper thin) to fit in between the fusalage halfs.well apparently still not enough.there is a buldge on the right side that will not allow the install of that intake.the only way to fix it is to rip out the aires pit and replace it with the monogram one. But since I have already cut the pit to shreads for the aires set this will take some time or I just buy another 15 dollar kit so this build is on ice

What about sanding the inside wall of the intake to conform to the bulge? That way you'd at least get this one finished...

Yeah the part that's buldged sits at the top of the intake so I can't with it being way noticible.its not worth the time I will just get another kit and use the supplied pit.

Perhaps yank out the side consoles and instrument panel to be replaced with the resin parts you're going to be yanking out of this soon-to-be paint test hulk?

My brother often ran into that exact issue with Resin cockpits just not fitting no matter how much filing and sanding he did. He got one for his 1/32 scale F-80 literally paper thin, and it still didn't allow the fuselage halves to close properly.

I've often wondered how they can release these AM cockpits/parts (not all, just the impossible fitting ones), without test fitting them. Can't be that they fit their test kits but no one else's.

I'm a little lost. Is the F-102A on hold, on hold till you find another kit down the road, or is it still an active build while you look for another Monogram kit ?

Like I said, I was looking forward to watching your mastery of re-scribing on this build.

Jessica, I've watched and followed many 1/32 scale builds of my brother, as he had to work his magic to get those resin cockpits to fit. Most did with a lot of effort. My only adventure with resin, was the engine in the SBD-4, and it was a perfect fit without having to do a thing. Guess I was really very lucky.

Justin & Jess, I rarely use AM parts: either resin or PE, as I try to fabricate the extra details from some form of sheet, rod, strip plastic, or other types of material such as copper wire, solder, etc. Even searching through one's spare parts box, or Rube Goldbering the part is detailing.


I've often had a heated exchange with my brother as to whether buying AM parts is detailing or not. My view is no, his view is yes. My contention is that more and more kits these days come with PE, and we're seeing resin starting to show up as well. So if it comes with the kit, it's not extra detailing, but if you purchase the same or similar as AM it's detailing? Makes little sense to me.

Joel when ever I do open cockpit's I usually go resin. this was going to be that way but has since changed.

Ok so on to my boggle. first pic is showing how I removed the filets on the intakes which since then have been smoothed out and are ready to go on.

this is a pic of the problem that I am dealing with. The buldge is on the right side it was worse but I sanded down the fuselage behind the intake which pulled it closer but I still have about 2 MM of space in order to get it flat. I squeezed the fuselage together and added a support behind the control panel to try and keep it there. I used testors for the slow dry time trying to get a good bond. About 2 hours for that.#2 shows what happens when I release the clamp I will figure it out its just going to take time.
