Markings: This will be the plane of Col. Scott, 23rd FG
in China. The markings are from the Sky Model sheet 48-047.
The decals look good to me and they have worked very well
in the past. The Tiger itself looks o.K to me. There
is a profile in the P-40 "walkaround" book, from squadron, on
this, the chinese roundel is bright blue as well.

I belive Sky Decal is right with the sharkmouth in red/black
From the pictures i found on the net, the plane got round
exhaust stacks and the blast tubes for the armanent are in
a light metal color. On these pictures, the plane looks well
maintained, not in airshow condition, but clean for an fighter in a combat zone

................ to search and recover the headrest took langer
than the decals.
I hope i finish this "projekt" soon.
Adding detail in this part of the built is fun. The wheel struts
get brakelines from wire. The gunsight will be photo etched.

This set is for german birds, so it is a captured gunsight

Bernd,
Glad you finally figured out how to post pictures. Actually, there is more then one way to accomplish it. I don't even use the IMG tab to post my pictures.

Your build to date is really excellent.

I'm not a big fan of pre-shading, as yours on the upper surfaces with the O.D. basically disappeared, yet works quite well with the neutral gray on the bottom side. Your paint fading more then off sets that issue with the O.D., as I prefer that random look to the follow the panel line concept of pre-shading. The use of a darker panel wash for the flying surfaces separation compared to a lighter shade for the various panel lines really looks good.

Nice choice of markings. I read Col. Robert Lee Scott's book "God Is My Co-Pilot", back in the mid 60's as a teenager, and he's always been a personal favorite of mine.

Looking forward to your next update.

Joel

Hi Joel
Thank you for your reply ! To put pictures on aeroscale was a challenge ! But i enjoy it and you will see ( hopefully) a lot after this one....
You said, you read his book, did his book has some pictures about the plane. The pic i have seen, looks about a relative well maintained aircraft ! So i kept weathering to a minimum.
The flying surfaces are fabric. I have seen a lot of pictures
from planes where this parts look a lot brighter, then the previous rarts of the plane ( OD planes )!

.......... small step foreward

... after i am looking at pictures from some warbirds, i have decided, to leave off the drop tank or bombs, because i belive Hasegawa did the undercarriage in a relative unpressured guise

........ and a gunsight !

I like this set from Extra Tech, because it is cheap and very useful, not for only LW types !
The painting was done with Humbrol 126 ( undersides)
and a mixture of Revell 46 and lighter shades (RV 45 + RV 05 )
on the upper sides.

The guns are painted black at first, but i drybrushed them later to a metal tone, they look shiny on the real thing !

The next thing will be to fit the aft cockpit clear parts, this will be very " interesting"
complete the kit Some more weathering , a clear coat of varnish, aerials, the rear mirror... and it will look like P - 40 ! I hope so
Time for modelling is very sparse for me in those days, so keep me motivated !

A small update on the finishing line
The wheels are on and some small details, it got an slight overspray with a lighter OD shade, some exhaust and oil staining
a slight chipping with a silver colour

Bernd,
Your question/comment on pictures in his book just brought back some really very old, and very fond memories from when I 1st read his book. I must have been in my mid teens, and my Grandmother would take my brother and myself to New York's famous Time Square a few times every year. There were what seemed to be dozens and dozens of small tourist type shops selling cameras, electronics (this is in the 1960s), and paperback books. I would always rummage through the books picking out a few war two books, and a few sports books. Then as now, paperback books have no pictures, just the cover and back cover.

Hi
Thank you both for your comments, it is a great pleasure to share this build with you.
Right now the clear parts are on ( 50% ) I messed up one of the rear parts a bit. Tomorrow i do pictures.
Beside my faults and the tricky fit, it is a great kit and well detailed. It is my second Hasegawa P-40 and there are pictures coming also from the first, built in 2010 as well.
Hi Joel, this are great memories, thank you for sharing! This books you never forgett, my first books were also paperbacks about german "Hilfskreuzer" raiders.I still have them, the paper has turned into yellow and i like them still.
May i got a copy of " God is my copilot " it sounds very interesting.
May amazon can help !
It is the time to think about the next one.Hmmmmmm?

Hi Terri
thank you for your nice reply

The Hasegawa P-40s are nice kits, i`am looking for a mid type version and a "Tiger" as well.
I am selling a lot of my kits currently on E*** to boost my budget and get into business, but i swear i will regret this step someday.

Hi, my P-40 is completed. I ran into problems with the clear part, aft of the cockpit, after a light sanding i painted the
edges, where they meet the fuselage OD and they fit without glue !

Bernd,
What a great build. Your P-40E came out near on perfect. Your weathering, especially on the bottom really makes the details pop. The airbrushed exhaust staining looks very realistic, yet not over done, as you can still make out the colors of the exhaust headers.

As for using those masks a 2nd time, if they're vinyl, you just maybe able to do it. I'm lucky just to have them actually stick and be the right shape and size.

Hi, thank you both for your nice comments !

Hi Terri, there are actually four in existence, two Hasegawas
( E / N ) as in the pics, the AVG Hawk i posted in your built,
it needs new aerials and new guns, and a Monogram P-40E, that needs a lot TLC to put it back on the shelf !Do you like Monogram Kits ? A few days ago i won a P-47 Bubbletop on E***

Hi Joel, those Eduard masks are nice to work with, but as you say, it is also a challenge to get them properly on, especially
on WW II bombers in 1/72 !
To post the built on Aeroscale, produces a lot of extra thrust, to get it finished.
