Ian , moving along nicely so far . Wing root area looks like it fit's pretty well . An area which I dislike on having to fill and sand .

Thanks Terri! Eduard designed the wing root so it falls on a natural panel line. As long as both sides are even there should not be any filling because the fit was that good. No issues on my build other than some minor polishing. Should have some camo pics up by the end of the day.

Best wishes,

Ian

Ian,
After reading Edgar's post on the dangers of steel wool, do you mind if I take out a small insurance policy

Joel---I have good dental records on file in case I blow myself up.
And I will divide my kit stash amongst the minions of Aeroscale.

Best wishes,

After a stint of yard work, the camo has begun on the Spit:

Medium Sea Grey is applied to the underside.

Ocean Grey is applied to the upper surfaces....

And asymmetrical post shading is applied to the upper surfaces as well.

Well, the camo is on and the post-shading is done. Just have to tweak the demarcation lines in a few places and then it will be time for panel lines and weathering.

Best wishes,

Ian

Ian,
Your camo paint scheme turned out quite well. And your post shading has that random natural look to it. It should tone down just a tad with some weathering for a near perfect effect.

I did some more work on the MK IX this weekend. The panel lines were shaded with Tamiya Smoke, thinned with Tamiya Thinner. Although prominent in the photos, the lines will be subdued somewhat by the Pledge gloss coat and the final flat coat. I also added exhaust stains and gun residue, via airbrush, using Tamiya XF-24 Grey with a few drops of Tamiya NATO Brown added. Metal chipping will be next.

Regards,

Ian

I added various stains and leaks to the MK IX using dots of Raw Umber oils streaked back with a brush. Also added a wash to the wheel bays using the new Testors CREATEFX Acrylic Wash cut with Pledge Floor wax.

Best wishes,

Ian

I continued work on the Spitfire. After the Pledge gloss coat was applied, I began the application of the decals. I used the superb Cartograf sheet that came with the Kagero book, Vol. 27 Polish Spitfires. The decals laid down perfectly with no issues. Since Eduard has such great rivet detail on this kit I may do a sludge wash next to accent them.

Happy Modeling,

Ian

A few minor points.

There was a light on the fuselage spine behind the aerial mast (part A3). A large orifice in the port wing root, the fuel cooler intake, and a smaller orifice (when it was photographed) for the gun camera in the starboard wing root. The later IFF Mk III (rod aerial under the starboard wing) was not fitted to Polish Spitfires until the autumn of 1943 so Jasia almost certainly had the earlier leads running from the fuselage side to the tailplane.

Ian,
The decaling is very impressive. Not a drop of silvering anywhere that I can see. I always decal 1st then do the sludge and pin washes so that they both over coat the decals for a weathered painted on look, as well as the panel lines then become consistent rather then stopping at each decal, then starting after they end. Just makes more work for you to go back and redo them.

Joe and Joel--Thanks. It's a very nice sheet. Eight Polish Spitfires in 72, 48 and 32.

Ian

Ian,
Well done. Your Spitfire certainly is a rock solid build.
I really enjoyed following your build from start to finish. Looking forward to your next build.

Well I am calling the Eduard Spitfire done. The plane depicted is "JASIA" of 316 Sqn. flown by F/L Wladislaw Gnys who is believed to have scored the first kill of the war flying a PZL in the Polish Air Force. Gnys ended up flying for the Polish AF, French AF and RAF in WW2.

Best wishes,

Ian

Thanks Joel. It was certainly a fun build. Just got the Eduard "Longest Day" MK IX edition in the mail the other day. Nothing like a IX in invasion stripes!

Ian
