Hi I've posted this on other sites but have had only partial success.
I have bough an Airfix 1/24 Me109E, but the decals look iffy to say the least. Now are there any out there, not from Hannants ,pricy to say the least and I'm in the UK !!!
So anyone got any ideas? Please send to my email address as I'm only here once in a blue moon,
Thanks for looking Alfie

Hi Alfie

I'll post here, if only to encourage you to check in more frequently.

I've always found Techmod decals to be excellent quality and very affordable.

If you fancy going the masking route, drop a line to Mal Mayfield here on Aeroscale and see if he can maybe rustle up some of his lovely Miracle Masks.

All the best

HI Rowan, Blue moon time already. How do you order from them? Cannot find out how to do it. Is it because I'm in the UK? Hope you can help ,they look like what I'm after Alfie

I've never heard anyone say that they can't find 109 decals lol.

I have never had any luck with Techmod. Apparently they've made leaps and bounds of progress lately, but the ones I have used have been terrible. Just a heads up.

Hi Alfie,

Mal is with you in England. Right now he is working on masks for Airfix's 1/24 scale Typhoon. His work-up blog is at http://aeroscale.kitmaker.net/forums/224738

It has his contact information as well as what he is doing right now, so you can judge the quality of his work.

Ok Matt where can I get 1/24 decals for a ME 109E? That's what I'm asking for. Don't want to pay the Earth for them, can do that quite nicely in the UK.

1/24 is an expensive scale.

I wasn't commenting on your inability to search, I was commenting on the irony of not being able to find markings for one of the worlds most modelled aircraft. There are billions of choices in any other scale, I thought it was funny that there aren't any in 1.24th.

I don't know what you consider to be expensive for a good set of decals and I don't live in the UK, but I would check Squadron.com and do a search for all their 1/24th decals, same with spruebrothers and freetimehobbies.

Hi Alfie,
Masks are the way to go contact me

I'd send you the set of decals from my kit but the paper protection is adhering to them! If this is what is wrong with yours it may be salvageable when they are soaked in water as the paper will possible soak free. Of course you won't know that until you try them out. I would be willing to try for you? I won't need my decals, as I will be using Miracle Paint Masks, a far better way to finish a large scale model

HI . What's wrong with mine is that they look "mouldy". Paper backing is brownish. I'd like to try yours if that's ok . What do you want for them. Thanks Alfie

Hi again

Intriguingly, going back 10 or 15 years, I've never had any problems. But I have heard some complain, so I don't know what it is that I do right or, conversely, others are missing.

They do have a tendency to stick instantly where placed - but a little determination (and good old Mk.1 Spit - the ultimate fall-back decal solution! ) gets round that.

All the best

I had the same problem that I've seen in numerous reviews - the decals were super thick and wouldn't settle down with a setting solution. I tried the Micro line and Mr Mark Softer. Even when they set in a little, the decals were too thick. I've heard recently that their new stuff is better again. Different print shop or something.

Hi Matt

Doubly intriguing - because, maybe, there's been a double-change?

A lot of the early concerns (back when Techmod supplied decals for the short-run kits that remain so dear to my heart) were that their decals were "too thin and stuck too soon" (to paraphrase the moans). That never worried me - simple care in application overcame any problems.

I never hit the "too thick and won't settle down" stage you highlight - probably because I don't get a chance to build enough!

Anyway, so long as they're good now, all's well.

All the best

Hmm, interesting indeed. Those Techmod decals I've been using (mainly their excellent Finnish Air Force insignia and registration number sheets) are fairly recent products, and those are among the best decals I've ever used: thin decal film, reacts well to decal solvents, and without any out-of-register issues. They aren't the most resilient decals, though. They can't take much excess abuse, but I guess that's due to them being so thin. But with proper care in application, I've had no problems with them.
