Hi all,

those who read my Nuremberg 2015 thread will know that I got a set of sprues of this kit. I really wanted to build it so I just started without haveing any PE of the kit. Originally I intended building it as is, but I ordered the Overtrees PE for it (sadly it will take some time to get here).

Again (see Bf 110D thread) I started with the wing and this was maybe the best fitting subassembly I ever built! It literally falls together. As I was in "the flow" I opted not to paint the background of the winglights but just glue on Alu-foil. This allowed me to close the wing immediately.



Then I glued as much parts into the cockpit as I could, followed by a Layer of silver and then interior green. A first black wash is on but of course the pit needs some fine tuning.




With the silver (decanted TS 30) I also sprayed the wing just to find some imperfections:



Waiting for the PE now to get instrument panel and seat belts in..

Nice start Steffen!

You should enter this in the "Hot Out of the Moulds" campaign - you couldn't get much hotter than a pre-release. (I'm tempted to start Kitty Hawk's Sabre Dog that just came in for it, but you'll have to look away because it's the "wrong" scale. )

@Mal: make that Focke-Wulfs and I am in, but i am a fan of balance so a Spitfire is not that bad btw I plan to used the camo mask again

@Magnus: sorry but I disagree TOTS was and is 48 scale, but I am pretty sure Eduard will do the Mk. VIII in "ant scale" too

BTW I will do Bobby Gibbes machine from the kit decals ... J-L was after the box art machine, but he did not get decals at Nuremberg. I am curious how far he is with his model...

The PE arrived at our (IPMS Deutschland) headquarter ... sadly it will take a few days to get here. I wish I had them now as I have to wait for the glue to dry on my Bf 110D.

Looking good so far and I am awaiting the kit to land here, if you are intending on doing A58-602 as RG-V, the kit decals have along with the DK Decals {RAAF Spitfire Sheet}show an error in there diametre. As the roundels are based on the Temora Aviation Museum's A58-758 {VH-HET}, the kit Sharks Mouth is from Spitfire A58-617 ZP-G and flown by F.Lt Compton.

Spitfire Mk VIII as A58-602 RG-V had 56 inches upper wing roundels and a full scolloped Shark Mouth.
I posted a scan of the old Superscale decal sheet that cover A58-602 as flown by Bobby Gibbs, on my posts [in Pre-Flight Checks] of the 32 scale Tamiya Spitfire.

So I will do the markings as they come from the box, if they are wrong in one or another aspect so be it.

Hi all,

now the cockpit is halfway done I could progress quite a bit. The fuselage is closed and glued to the wing. The tail control surfaces were completed yesterday.



This morning I added lower cowl, exhausts and upper cowl. Don't be fooled the clamp is just to hold the cowling down while the glue is setting and this way I can control it better than with tape.

You're making really good progress. BTW, have you considered using the now fashionable Magnus Spit on a stick technique for the painting process?

We'll things slow down a bit at the moment. I have completetd the pit with steering column and gun sight. I added the undercarriage legs and parts of the canopy.



When I sprayed the underside I noticed a sink mark due to excessive used of glue, which I filled and sanded.

P.S. @ Ernest: Well, I have a lot of projects running parallel, sometimes the progress is good sometimes not so. I have several "lack of motivation points", Biggest is cockpit but sometimes I also have problems with painting and decalling ... and finishing it. If I reach such a lock I just start something new or grab a started project. It is not efficient, but it suits me and in the end it is just a hobby meant to be fun...

Looking quite good, and you're still making excellent progress.

Your build has a lot to do with me deciding that my newest build will be Eduard's outstanding Mk.IX "The Longest Day" Spitfire kit, which to a neophyte Spitfire modeler, looks very similar.

Now the filler is dra I sanded ad repainted that area. Then I taped off the elevators and "keel" and sprayed the upper side ocean grey (all Tamiya) IMO it is a bit light but considering a scale effect it is o.k. (I did add a small amount of black though you can hardly see it)



Next step will be masking the camo (I am just too hamfisted to airbrush it free hand)

Looks darn near perfect with a coat of paint.

From what I've been able to put together for RAF colors using Tamiya paints from a few trusted sites, here's the break down:

Ocean Gray -> XF53 Neutral Gray
Dark Green -> XF61 Dark Green
Medium Sea Gray -> XF20 Medium Gray

I use the new paints XF 81, 82, 83 and I think they are optimized for their 32 scale Spit.

Sadly the paint scheme in the instructions does not meet the A-scheme pattern of Mals Miracle masks. There are other planes in the kit that do, so I guess this is just a different schem. Thus I had to bite the bullet and paint it free-hand (it is much too laborious to cut masks for the whole thing)



I am not totally happy, but it is the best I can do. Also I noticed that the tail band is not included in the decal sheet, which is a problem as I should have painted it first to ease masking. The white wing leading edge is the next step.

Still undecided about the fuselage band. Either decal or airbrushed, both bear some work in it. Next is a clear layer as preparation for the decals.
