I have had an idea for a campaign.
This started as I have been looking into the history of RAF Tangmere airbase that closed down in the 70s and is about 5 miles away from where I live.
Basically build any aircraft from the nearest military or commercial airport nearest to your home or work.
The airfield can be still in use or closed down, and any aircraft from any era that landed there.
Any feedback welcome.

My local is RAF Cosford which now has a museum on site as do quite a lot of other airfields, Coventry and Duxford for example. If places like that are our locals, could the idea include aircraft on display?

Hi, well it would qualify as the aircraft did sort of land there.
Also they were/are airfields.

I would be in for this campaign.
Lived close to Debden and Duxford one build for each!.
Debden :- Eagle Sq Spit or 335th Mustang.
Duxford :- Javlin
This could change though

A very interesting idea. For me that would be Westover AFB.
Currently there are C5As there. I see them all the time. In the past there have been B-52s, KC-135s, KC-97s, C-123s, and numerous smaller types. All of this is squarely in my area of interest.

I have multiple choices in my neck of the woods(desert). Luke AFB, Falcon Field home of the CAF (Arizona Wing). Not to mention the ones south of me near Tucson (can we say boneyard). I would have a large selection of aircraft to choose from. Not sure I can take on another campaign but I do like the idea. Would be interesting to watch.

Curse you Andy
I don't want to build any aircraft at the moment as I'm having great pleasure with floaty things but this campaign idea got my attention.
For me I have a few choices:
Biggin Hill where I used to live close to
Hatfield home of DH since 1934 until the late 60's and still home to the DH museum
Old Warden home of the shuttleworth collection
Hendon home of the RAF museum and the Grahame White factory
Hornchurch
Luton
Northholt
Radlett
RAF South Ruislip - Thor missile squadron base.
What to choice?
1/48 Thor missile?

A really nice idea.
Just some kilometres away, there was a cold war emergency start and landing strip on the public road with maintenance areas beside.
The closest town, Karlskrona had a naval air station based there from 1915 til 1949.
Air Force bases are F12 Kalmar (nowadays only civilian) and F17 Kallinge (still active)

I'm in - My house is within sight of what was RAF Manston's runway, which should give me quite a few options for aircraft that have landed there. Historically, it was a front line Battle of Britain fighter station. Later in the war, the USAF took the base over, and during their residence, extended the runway, and supposedly it is still the longest runway in this country. More recently, with the base reverting to a civilian role, you would often see 747 cargo planes coming in and out. There is also a Fire Crew training facility there, which has a pair of FGR.2 Phantoms for them to practice on.

Hmmm I like the Idea Old Courtland Army Air Base Nearby have played some golf there can still see the foundations of the the Barracks and the original Air Strip is still in use the base water tower is also still there and in use base closed down in 1946 3rd AF Training base B-24 pilots trained there as well as some small trainer type planes. will have to do some research to see what all they had there.
J.C. I was at Westover AFRB way back in the Day lived there for two years in base housing my Dad taught Rotc at UMass. remember the C-5's landing and taking off. if I remember right wasn't Westover an Alternate landing site for the Shuttle.

I might join with Naval Air Station in Glenview, IL. I remember an air base yet, where I like to spend summer afternoons now. The air base was developed into very nice and attractive neighborhood. And Revell has a Texan with marking from that closed now airfield. So you can count me in.

well after doing some further research I have found out the following About Courtland AAF. The Airfield was run by the 446th Army Air Corp Airbase Unit and housed the 13th Basic flying training Grp. later on in January 1944 was transitioned into a B-24 Training school. the Following aircraft were stationed at the Airfield during its time.
B-24 Bombers seen references for E H J models
BT-13A and BT-15 Trainers
AT-10's from Beechcraft
UC-78's from Cessna
AT-17's Beechcraft.
And for a very Brief time some A-20 havoc's
that's all I have been able to find so I guess it falls upon me now to find out if there is anything besides the B-24 that is produced in kit form.

Tom, my Dad was in the USCGR and took me along with him to Glenview many times! I finished this for the first Hangar Queen campaign...

I like this campaign idea, and I'd try to fit it in.

Well we seem to have the ten people interested to sign up, so I will submit this as a campaign and let the powers to be decide when it shall run.
I have several aircraft in mind for this campaign, from W.W.1, BoB, and cold war, which all flew out of Tangmere.

Here in Kettering I am within 10 miles of at least 6 airfields.
1: Nearest is Grafton Underwood, the first and last US bombs dropped on Europe by the bombers of the 8th came from here, the latter by planes of the 384th BG
2: Desborough, used as an RAF Bomber Command training base
3: Harrington, originally built as a satellite to Desborough but gained fame as the home of the 'Carpetbaggers' and the only Northamptonshire airfield from which B-24's flew. Latterly it was the home of 3 Douglas Thor launchpads
4: Sywell, or as I call it, Northampton International Airport, home to many Tiger Moths during the war and has a history stretching back to the 1910's. A lot of subjects here
5: Spanhoe: Home to 2 USAAF transport squadrons. Mainly C-47's but also saw C-46's
6: Chelveston, originally built as an RAF airfield but later handed over to the 8th AF. B-17's flew from here, both RAF and US.
If I was to go out a tad further I would encounter Deenethorpe, Molesworth, Poddington, Market Harborough and Kings Cliffe.
Plenty of choice here and I already have my subject. Visiting Scalemodelworld last November I came upon the Belcher Bits stall, they were selling their 1/72 resin kit of the Thor for a reduced £25.00, I had to have one. The Thor would be my choice

Nellis AFB would supply a pretty diverse selection.

Glad the campaign is gaining interest, it should lead to a nice and diverse range of aircraft.
Right I had a better design a ribbon, if I can remember how .
Andy :-)

Hi all, mind if I jump in too?
This campaign sounds really interesting, I live about a 15-20 minutes walk away from a place called Fairlop Waters which is a lake with a small wildlife reserve and a golf course around it where I often walk the dog, any way, long story short, it is built on the site of a WWII airfield which I think was involved in the battle of Britain and the squadron posted there would most likely have operated Hurricanes or Spitfires, I think it would have been too small for anything bigger than a single seat fighter. I will do a little more research on the subject, and when I have found out what types flew from Fairlop, I will find myself a kit to enter!
Really looking forward to this one
Cheers, Simon

I may join in here, haven't built an aircraft for ages. Maybe a Tangmere Meteor or something. My late father-in-law finished his RAF Reserve service there after the war and I flew from there in Chipmunks as a cadet. Later on my wife and I helped out some Sundays in the museum (many years ago!)
