Going to be getting underway with Trumpeter's Whirlwind.

I can trace my fascination with the Whirlwind back to a holiday when I was 13 and I bought the Battler Britton Holiday Special book with the aircraft on the front and the story False Glory. As you can see I still have the book 39 years later.

Well unpacked the box and I have to admit for what I paid it appears to be a pretty pricey kit.

Six sprues: Five grey plastic; One clear.

Eight page instruction booklet and a sheet of decals. The decals are for two aircraft from No 263 Squadron RAF. Aircraft P6969 carries the earlier Green/Brown camouflage whilst P7116 has the later Sea Grey/Green camouflage. P7116 also carries the pennant of the squadron commander lucky cloverleaf and is a presentation aircraft "Bellows Argentina No 2".

There also appears to be some difference in what Trumpeter's call out for lower surfaces. Trumpeter indicates Light Gull for both aircraft whilst my research says that P6969 should be Sky (Duck Egg Green) and P7116 should be Medium Sea Grey.

I have washed all the sprues in warm soapy water and will be commencing construction soon.

I'm one step ahead of you, just glued the fuselage halves together. Tomorrow is sanding time. Sure this kit is a bit pricey. I've paid 27 Euros for it. But what options do you have with this kit in quarterscale? I think the other one is short run from MPM, if I'm correct.
You're right with the paints. I will go for the later version and use Medium Sea Grey, Ocean Grey and Dark Green on it. Should be ready by mid April, hopefully ....

Happy modelling

I have fond memories of the AirFix 1/72nd scale offering.

Hi Torsten

Close enough - it's Classic Airframes (done for them by MPM). There are so many accuracy issues with Trumpy's kit, I actually bought an old CA kit again on eBay for old times' sake - I built one when it first came out and really enjoyed it.

All the best

But it wouldn't be a Trumpy kit then would it?

Update: 17 March 2015

Painted all the interior instrument panel, wheel wells and gear struts with matt black and the cockpit components with gloss black as a base. Will post pics soon.

Looking forward to following your build, as we don't often see any models of the Whirlwind posted.

My pre shading. Construction starts tonight.

Just a couple of notes:

-Comparing the instrument panel to the instrument panel decal the moldings on the part bare no resemblance to the decal.

- No gun-sight! So any hints on scratch-building one would be appreciated.

A quick note on the gunsight, Quickboost does a couple of British type gunsights, one is a refctive type and the other is gyroscopic. I'm not really up on my Whirlwind parts, but one of these might work or at least give you a leg up on building one. The site URL is http://www.quickboost.net/Loga/quickboost_banner1.gif, or most of the major mail order Hobby shops carry a fair selection of Quickboost parts. The pictures of the sights is towards the bottom of their 1/48 section, so if you go looking, start from the bottom.

There is a 2. gun sight in the Hasegawa/Revell kit of the Spitfire Mk. IX, if you have that kit. I have it and I'll use it.
