Hey Magnus,
Welcome back! I was beginning to fear that i would someday see your Schwalbe in the Hangar Queens XXIV Campaign thread. Looks very nice!

Good to have you back,

Oliver, Thomas and Gary! Thanks! There are other candidates for a Hangar Queen campaign (MANY others!) but this one is most probably going to get finished. If I'll manage in time, that's another question though !

The best part when building things Luftwaffe...

...the mottling! Still the engines to do and then I'm going to add some RLM02 as well (as per my Smith & Creek references and who am I to distrust them?) !

Looks fantastic, Magnus. i really like your mottling. It's the kind of pattern I wish to do on my next 109G.

Best Wishes,

Gary

Magnus,
The paint and camo scheme really looks quite good. You're really quite a master with these older kits.

Bad news my friends!

I got some kind of chemical reactions between decals and the clearcoat that turned the clear decal film milky. I should have waited for them to settle or even better, doing it the Mal-way: painting them!

I usually tell people that everything is fixable and that paint can be washed off and so on but I simply don't feel the final result that can be achieved will be worth the effort.

Some final photos before things went bad big-time:

I am sorry to say that instead of ending up on the shelf of doom forever, this one has gone for recycling. Probably as energy...

I'll keep the avatar here as a memory as well...

Aaah, come on Magnus!
I'm sure you can finish it into a fine model.
Give a bit of washing an weathering and it will look good
for everybodys eyes.

Do it

Hi Magnus,
Sorry to hear that your efforts went bad right at the end. She was looking quite beautiful. I hope in the future you get inspired to build one with that scheme again. I was quite looking forward to see her finished.

Best Wishes,

Gary

Magnus,
Sorry to hear that you had that decal issue. Your too experienced, and to knowledgable for it to have been a simple mistake that's easily correctable.

Sounds like the old decals just reacted to whatever clearcoat you applied.

There's been a few times I've taken the same exact route you have with a major modeling issue. Sometimes it's just easier to deal with it that way.

In any event, I'm looking forward to your next build blog.

So sorry to see things go off the rails so close to the end of your build Magnus, this was another very informative thread and it was looking great.

As Joel said, I'm looking forward to your next build.

Cheers, D

Thomas! Sorry, it's already gone MIA!

Gary! If I find that kit again I might buy it just to have it for future needs! Regarding that paint scheme: there be more of that later on this autumn but then on a 109!

Joel! Good to hear that I am not alone. I think this is only the second time I've decided upon this course of action, it impairs my enjoyment of modelling having this one sit there staring me in my face. I did feel a bit guilty though since I was one of the people who urged you to redo your Spit a few months ago: you're obviously braver than me !

Damian! Thanks ! I really hoped to finish it in time for the 262 campaign!

Magnus,
I do remember that. Most guys did. Of course the Spit was just painted, no decals, and stripping it at that stage was easy enough to do. If I screwed it up. Well, I gave it shot.

But you're way past that stage. I don't know of any way to remove damaged decals without damaging the paint. And damaged paint almost always means stripping it down to raw plastic, as there just isn't any way to control the process or keep it localized.

Like I said, if the Mojo isn't there to keep at it, and you knew the odds were small at best at ever picking it up again, you did the right thing. I wish I could say I only did it once or twice, but I've thrown out a lot more builds that got the better of me. Especially, when I came back to the hobby and thought I knew more then I did.

Oh, sorry to hear the build went belly-up so near the final stages. Are you sure if couldn't be salvaged? I mean, even if you have to strip the paint from where the decals are, redoing those areas wouldn't like [i]that[/url] huge a project to me.

Depending on the decals, soaking them with Micro Sol might work. And then there's the option of trying to pull the decals off using tape, but that carries the risk of lifting paint along the decals.
Yeah, some paints sand OK, while some (mostly acrylics) sand hardly at all, prefering to flake off instead.

Joel! Thanks for the encouragement !

Eetu! Sorry, it's been binned so there is nothing there to work on!

Strictly off the record and certainly not for my wife's eyes: I've bought a new one, it's on its way from Australia right now !

Magnus,
My problem with boxes arriving every so often from around the world, it's hard to not have my wife see them. Of course by now she just puts them on my workbench for when I get home from work. Also the charge bills are there too, as the agreement is that I pay for my models and supplies out of my modeling fund not the household funds.
